After the Jacobsville land tour last Sunday myself, Ken Reese, Ken Gebhardt and John & Lorie Roe decided to take an aerial tour of the two Ontonogan lights as well as Fourteen mile point.

The pilot said Fourteen Mile point is only accessible by plane or by snowmobile in the winter since the water is very shallow with submerged rocks where the light is located.

The interior of the light was burned several years ago by some kids who were having a party and lit the hardwood floors on fire. But the walls are several feet thick, so the structure itself is pretty sturdy.

Great Job, Bryan, and thanks for posting!! I know that I was very close to finding the overgrown road, when I went in search of it on the ground.

Maybe the next time I will first take a GPS and go flying over it and then try it from the ground hiking back to the cooridinates..

Your pictures turned out great Bryan. It was a fun adventure! It's tough to get a steady shot off and try not to get the plane wing in the picture.

14 Mile Point was structure similar to Big Bay lighthouse.

Paul, the best way to hike to it is along the beach. It is a 12 mile round trip hike. The road has long ago been reclaimed by nature.

Pam and I talked to the owner of 14 mile point on Friday July 30th in Houghton. He was planning to take family to it by boat soon. They camp out in the fog signal building.

Suzanne, I know I was a lot closer than a 12 mile hike along the beach.. I was on some logging roads back there and just felt like I was fairly close..

Boots, machete, compass and a GPS plus a couple of friends ..

Of course permission from the owner would help, also..

The plane we flew in was really small. It was only a 4-seater. Bryan Acree and Ken Reese flew together first and then me, John, and Ken Gebhardt flew the second flight with the pilot.

Bryan, I know how difficult it is to shoot from a moving plane. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing these images.

Ron, add to that the fact that they were in a low wing plane instead of a high wing! Have to work around the wing that is in the way...

Actually shooting from a low wing plane is not that hard. My father ownes and flies a Cherokee 140, which is very simular, if not the same model plane in Lorie's picture and we used to shoot photos all the time. All you have to do is get in a nicely banked turn, with your target above the wind and fire away.
