How about showing off your favourite or most interesting lighthouse picture? Would be fascinating to see everyone showing these pictures.

Well and since we started this..... Here is our most interesting: The lighthouse at Rubjerg Knude in Denmark, which is slowly being "swallowed" by a sand dune. My (Margret's) favourite lighthouse... hard to say since there are so many I love. But this one comes close: It is Kiel Lighthouse (C1215) in Germany. In the back you can see the sailing ship ' Alexander von Humbolt' . She once was the Lightship Kiel, which was stationed just where the lighthouse is now. Well how about yours?

John and I have seen lots of lighthouses but these are some of our favorite TALL tower lighthouses. St. Augustine, Florida St. Augustine at night. Ponce Inlet, Florida Tybee Island, Georgia Last but not least...Cape Florida. All 4 towers we have been able to climb.

Wow, so many great pictures of lovely lighthouses... well here are a couple more of ours: This little tower is Brinkamahof in Bremerhaven in Germany. The tower is not active any longer and has been moved from its original location to the marina to serve as a cafe and meeting place for seamen. St. Catherine's Point on the Isle of Wight in South England is Stan's favourite lighthouse. Maybe because his father was lightouse keeper there.

That pic of the Rubjerg Knude Fyr Light is interesting, unfortunately, my recent pics of the Lydia Ann Channel Lighthouse aren't as glamourous as the above photos, but, I have this one, which I really like. It shows an approaching storm behind the Lighthouse and a wave of water in front of it.

If you ever do go back to visit it, you should take the Kohootz Tour . It tours the nearby channels and gives you a close-up look of the LH. This is as close-up as they take you.

Wow... that is close... shame we only got this close: Don't think we can go to TX again. It is a long way from the UK and the only state we will manage will be California (visiting daughter). But we hope to see some of the CA lights!

Thee California lights are beautiful and well worth seeing! Hope you enjoy. Some of my favorites are Point Sur, Point Bonita and Point Vincent.

OK, you need to expound on that one and share some more pictures of how it displays.

This light in Skagen does not display any longer. They used to lower teh bucket, light a fire in it, then raise it again. Find out more on our website at: The three Skagen Lights Hope this helps.

Stan & Margaret, You last post helped a lot. I found your link very interesting. I sort of ascertained that your description of the mechanism was how it actually worked. But I'm usually wrong. Just a warning, folks. do you realize that if you keep posting such facinating pictures and information about lighthouses here on the Forum, you will undoubtedly have some of us knocking on your door if we ever have the opportunity to visit the UK? bobo

No problem. I've never seen it spelled that way. Just out of curiosity, that how they spell all the Margrets' names in Europe?
Just curious...like to add to my knowledge of the world, no matter how major the fact.

Hope you all don't mind me mentioning this ... Sorry if I seem a bit touchy - I am not really ... "my" spelling of the name is - or so my father said - the original spelling of this hebrew word. It means "perl" ... hmmm :p ... How that fits me is questinable

Margret,
It's not an intentional thing, I'm sure. there's a e-mail that keeps getting circulated that shows that our brain can decipher misspelled words if they are done in a certain manner.
You can add to that the idea that many people will look at your name and actually see it as Margaret even though it isn't.
Final point- my name is Dennis Whelan and I use wheland as my name on various forums and lists I belong to. I chose it for it's simplicity. I have given up reminding people that my name is not Dennis Wheland.
It's hard to get something out of people's brains once it's there.
Dennis
