The only time it rained in December while I was on Kauai was when we went to visit the Kilauea lighthouse. It was dry at the airport when we landed and pouring buckets at the lighthouse. It finally stopped raining long enough for me to take some quick pictures.

This is first US lighthouse seen by ships arriving from the Orient. It still has the original Fresnel lens in the tower. The tower is closed to the public.

A picture of the tower with the new automated electronic beacon.

A view of the lighthouse from the grounds which is also a wildlife refuge center.

Thank you for the beautiful pictures of a lighthouse that I will probably never see in person. It is a beautiful little light, isn't it? On a beautiful island. Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for the picktures Lori. Went there on my honey moon but could not get by the fences. Just happened to see the sign on the road as we drove by to some place else. We weren't into lights then, but we have a nice long distance shot of the light and cliff. Brings back how nice it was to be there, especially with someone you love laugh .

Thanks for sharing your great photos Lorie. They look especially nice on another night where we're expecting below zero temps! smile

Hi Lorie,

Nice photos. When I visited this lighthouse in January 2000, it was overcast, too. I didn't get any close up photos of the lens like you did. We spent half a day there and enjoyed watching the birds soar in the wind. Although we saw lots of whales from our condo near Poipu Beach, we didn't see any from the lighthouse.

Thanks for sharing.

Tammy

Thanks for all the nice comments. It was dry everywhere I went on Kauai except at the lighthouse. frown The previous 2 years that I was there, the weather was beautiful. I always stay down at Poipu Beach which is not as rainy as the north shore.

FYI...not far from the lighthouse was where the 14 year old girl had her arm bit off by a shark a couple of weeks before we were there.

Lorie, I particularly like the closeup of the lantern room.

Lorie,

We were lucky when we were on Kauai in July- the weather was perfect.

It was just fine both at the Lighthouse and in Poipu where we stayed also (Sheraton Resort Kauai).

The photos bring back good memories of our Hawaiian trip.

Lorie,

Nice photos. We just got back from Hawaii a few days ago ourselves but didn't visit Kauai this time. Did you see any whales off that island?

Dan we saw whales off the coast of Maui towards Lanai. It was hard to get photos because you never know when they're going to flip up in the water.

If you look at the photos from my posting of the Lahaina Harbor lighthouse, the last photo shows one of the whale's tail that I saw breeching.
