I hope you guys aren't tired of me uploading pictures! Fall lighthouse sunsets are my favorite to shoot because of the color and I've been snap happy lately. i just had to show this off from earlier tonight in South Haven, Michigan...

The best part about this shot? It's digital. I got this really cool new camera and I exposed this at ISO 100, F16 for 30 seconds (yes, 30 seconds) on a Compact Flash card. At 100% magnification in Photoshop, I was afraid I would have grain or "noise" from the long exposure, but there is hardly any!

I was so tickled at how well it turned out I just *had* to share.

Impressive photo Jen. I shot the very same sunset tonight just a few miles up the road in Grand Haven. Of course my slides don't offer the instant gratification of your digital....

I also like the Little Sable shot in the previous post.

Mike, I thought of you and Gary when I was out there last night, wondering if maybe I would run into one of you - I think Gary may be on his way back fron the South. It's funny too, because I was in Kzoo on my way north and decided to take the long way home and I thought about Grand Haven, and said to myself it had been three years since I had done a SH sunset. Be sure to post your images when you get them back!

John, I knew you would ask that question ... but first of all, you have to admit that the posting in your Chapter 6 really *wasn't* you on the surfboard... hehe ..

To really answer your question: I have been itching to get a new digital SLR but couldn't see putting the money out for one - until they came out with the new Canon Digital Rebel last month. I have ALWAYS been anti-Canon because I love my Nikon N90s so much. The price was right, at $1000 for body and kit lens (I am in the process of purchasing another, higher quality lens) and it carries the same processor chip and mirror as the high-end Canon 10D. It's a 6.3MP and the better tonality and smoothness is there because of the larger chip in the camera to capture the image. This camera takes over 50 Canon EF lens too, which means you can use their "L" series pro lens with it if you want. The advantage is that if you are not the "pro" photographer who may not understand all the manual functions of a camera (the 10D can be overwhelming), this new digital Rebel has program, portrait, landscape modes among others so if you don't want to go manual, you can shoot automatic. But, it also has aperature and shutter priority, and manual mode with bulb setting with the capability to expose for 2 1/2 hours, plus complete manual override (focus and exposure) if you want to be creative. I've been shooting with it for three days and have been extremely pleased with the results I'm getting, even with the cheap kit lens that comes with it.

I could not get this quality out of my little "prosumer" digital Nikon Coolpix 5700, plus it was too slow for what I wanted to do with it. If you want to see more that I've done, I can post them if you wish. smile

Jen,

Great shot!

I have lots of $ invested in Canon equipment. I had considered getting the new digital Rebel and was going to ask if anyone had tried one! Well, I ended up getting an EOS 3 instead a few months ago. I still am considering getting the Digital Rebel. However, I spent my last paycheck on a new computer. So, it will have to wait a while.

I'm interested in seeing more of photos from your new camera! Keep them coming.

Tammy

Tammy, I am in the process of converting to Canon from Nikon. I am going to be picking up an Elan 7 body so I can use all the lenses with the new digital Rebel (with the exception of the lens that came with it since it's not interchangeable). See my Grand Haven post for 10-20-2003. This camera rocks, even with the cheap lens! I can't wait to get a new lens! smile I'm still trying to decide if I want to go with the Canon 28-135 USM IS lens or if I want to try the new Sigma 24-135/2.8-4.0 77mm that just came out. I have shot Sigma for the past four years and been very pleased with the 28-70/2.8 I had. What lens do you own and how do you feel about them?
