This is one of the lighthouses everyone should be familar with. First the approach Now it appears. After crossing the wet and dangerous rocks. A peek inside. Glenn Swigart leads the way up the tower. Anne Puppa by the Fresnel lens. This fourth order Fresnel lens is just sitting in the lantern room. A view of the helicopter landing pad from the lantern room.

Thanks for sharing your photos! I really like the "now it appears" photo and the one of the fresnel lens. It must be gorgeous!

Dennis, East Quoddy is on Campobello Island, which for all practicality is suburban Maine. If you go into Maine, especially into the NE part of the state, and don't visit East Quoddy (or Head Harbor Light), you will regret the choice. I expect a fair number of our October outing will be making the trip north to visit.
Thanks for sharing your pictures, Robert. Hard to believe they have a spare Fresnel just sitting on the floor. Hope you will be sharing some more of the lights you all visited.

Robert, thanks so much for sharing your photos. A trip to envy...but working on this possibility in October.
Dave, that fourth order sitting on the floor appears to have the majority of it's prisms missing. Maybe that's why it's just sitting there, OR maybe because it's just sitting there, it now has a lot missing.

Judy, Seeing that 4th Order just sitting on the floor made me horribly upset. However your thought provoking statement .... maybe because it's just sitting there, it now has a lot missing. made me feel a lot worse. Thanks a heap. bobo

I agree with Dave. A visit to East Quoddy is a must. It is an adventure with the tide schedule and walking out to the light station and back before the tide rolls back in. We didn't get a look inside so these photos are really a treat. Since we were there I believe a local group has taken over the ownership of the station. We spoke to one of the members in the gift shop that you pass on the way to the park and he talked about the cost to renovate the station. They have some good ideas though. Judy

I was just making a joke- the title of the thread contains Maine- not Canada - suburban or not. Dennis

What surprised me is they didn't even stamp my passport at the border and I didn't think of asking them until we were long gone! Judy

Gather failure to stamp your passport is going to change in January and a passport will be required to get in and out of Canada--driver's license or birth certificate won't pass muster.
Dangerous walk across the wet rocks, equally dangerous entry to the kitchen--the sign on the door does say "No Trespassing" and I think it means the same thing on both sides of the border. However, maybe because it's uncertain as to country LH is located in, the sign means something else. . . .

The Chesapeake Chapter folks were given a tour of the inside of the light courtesy of the group doing the restoration work, I believe. They didn't break and enter.
The trip from the parking lot to the light and back is an adventure all by itself. It has gotten easier with the new ladders that have been installed. The old ones would certainly not have passed muster with OSHA, but they were a significant part of the adventure. As I have told others, the trip to the light is one you will recount often when telling of your lighthouse adventures, and is one that can only be fully appreciated by those who have made the trip. Well worth it!

Great pictures! I love this light! When I was there they still had the old ladders and they were definatly scary! I've heard the new ones are much better. That's one I need to go back to. There is an added bonus. When you first cross the bridge from Lubec to Campabello you will see Mullholland Light. The Roosevelt Estate is also on the Island and is open to the public.

We were also went inside Portland Head and Owl's Head which are not normally open to the public. I will try to provide photos of those.

Thanks for sharing the photos. I did not make it as far as Canada, ran out of time when I visited West Quoddy recently. Hope to do a separate trip to see Canadian lights next year. HCS

I came across this flickr album showing a painting excursion to East Quoddy (or Head Harbor) lighthouse. Many excellant views, including some at high tide.

Hey, those are pretty cool! I just added that person as one of my Flickr contacts - great photos and lighthouse love = a spot amongst my (now) 6 contacts! I need more lighthouse people on there...I have a friend of mine from school, a few people with cool Land Rover photos, and some people who added me. Some other CF members have to join Flickr!

Thanks for the flickr album, Bob. Lovely shots of a gorgeous light! Really wish I could get up there while in Maine. I'm just glad that I will get to see and do everything which I will - an opportunity not to be missed!

Great shots of another one of my favorite ligthouses. I'm so glad it is being taken care of. I would like to see this one from the water.
