The Lighthouse Photography thread is one of my favorites. As a matter of fact I personally enjoy any thread with pictures.

Where are all our photographers? There are a few of us that post pics from time to time, but where is everyone else?

I think it's a given fact that when people visit the various lights, across this great land of ours, they usually bring a camera. If they bring a camera then they usually take pictures.

Don't feel that if you saw a picture of a particular light here at the CF that it's already been covered. I'm sure many people like myself enjoy seeing different photos of that same light. The sky can be different, the foliage may have changed, the water can be interesting, the angle of the photo offers unlimited change, and the overall composition can always generate interest.

Do you have some lighthouse photos to share? If so, do share them with us!

I wish that I had some pictures to share but I haven't been anywhere since June to see lighthouses. Now, if you wanted to see some dog pictures, I have been to a couple of dog shows.

OK, here is a picture that I took in June when I was "touring" with Beaconfollower. We had a great time and saw some neat lights!! Here is Assateague - I loved going up and over the Bay Bridge-Tunnel and wish that we could have gone over a couple of more times. You can see that Asateague is in need to a paint job.

Unfortunately all I have are pictures that your pups wouldn't even like -- I don't even like them. Chalk it up to a lot of inexperience while taking the picture and a whole heap of embarassment at looking at the result. My feeble attempts at photography would only be appropriate for the "bad joke" page.

They definitely lack the stunning beauty that is incorporated in the phots that many of you have posted, but also are inappropriate for anyone with good taste. Imagine that you are driving behind a smoking bus. Remember that nauseated feeling?

So that's why nothing from me. Maybe in the future if I can manage to improve.

But, Bob, at least you try! And you do have pictures to look at in the future to remember your trip there. That is enough. I am not the brilliant photographer that I wish I was either but I do have the memories to look back on and that is the main thing. I am envious of those tho take such beautiful pictures!! frown

Hey, I love to check everyone's photos, and I enjoy sharing my own- only problem, it's been nearly a year since we've even been up to Marblehead, a place I try to get to every few months. It's been WAY too busy a year, what with buying another place and moving up the road a few miles. That said, I'm taking four days off the middle of Oct. and am thinking of going up to Pt. Austin, Mi. Any suggestions from my Michigan friends?

Well Cone(flower)head, or mombo if you prefer,

You're absolutely right. But post cards have pictures taken by someone else. Like the song says, "It's gotta be mine" --- or something like that. But I'll learn. Maybe.

Photography takes a certain amount of creativity and expertise. And I'm the most un-creative person I know. Sort of like the culinary arts. The only thing I will never have to clean in my townhouse is my oven. It's never been turned on -- but it's a good place to store winter sweaters during the summer.

You are too funny Bob! But then I've got spices and paper plates in my broken dishwasher. And my oven only gets dirty from heating up slices of leftover pizza. smile

This photographer is on hiatus I guess. Haven't been to a lighthouse since Door County in May and haven't even finished going through those photos yet...

I have tons of photos, I just don't post them to the forums because it's such a pain to do so. If it's just a couple photos, then I'll post, but with a large-scale trip, it would be a pain.

I like what Paul did a few months ago with his "Cruising to the Cruise" series. My mom just got a new laptop, thus giving me her old one. Perhaps I could bring this with me on trips, and thus accomplish a) preventing forum withdrawl, b) be able to upload photos immediately, so that if they're bad, we can go back, c) keep immediate logs (I find it a pain to handwrite in the logbook...), and d) post photos nightly to the CF.

Sue, perhaps you come down and do the NJ challenge...I'd love to meet you! If you do, make sure to go to Sea Girt! smile smile

No need to post "tons" of photos, Greg. Just pick out one or two of your favorites and post them.

I too really like the adventures Paul brings us on via the Net, but I'm happy when a few different pics show up a couple of times a week every now and then.

Show us what you got, Greg!

I've got my website that has some of the photos from my CT/RI/MA trip and my Seaway Trail trip. I have the latter pages complete, I just have to make enlargable photos and zoom (close-up cropped photos of far away lights) pictures. I also want to edit the text, which I wrote a few months ago, and make the redesigned pages for CT/RI/Am trip. I'll make this the first place that I put the link when I launch it! smile

For now, a teaser...

That's Grand Island Front Range in Buffalo. QUite a nice light! It was one of those "sneaking into the yacht club" moments...

Now that's a nice picture, Greg! You picked the right time of the year to do it re the leaves are gone from the trees. The leafless trees make the photo more interesting.

Keep them coming!

Here's two more. I'd share more, but we have company coming in 1/2 hour, and I have to finish cleaning my room FAST. eek

This is Five Mile Point, CT, last summer.

This is Tibbets Point, NY from the same trip as Grand Island.

Okay, company's not here yet, here's a couple more.

This is Goat Island, RI last summer.

Race Rock, NY from my sailing trip in June.

When we stopped in Mystic for the night on that sailing trip, we went out for ice cream at this place suspended over the river along the Rt. 1 Bascule Bridge. I saw this, and HAD to take a photo for you guys...just remembered I took it.

Here's more...

This is Barcelona Light on Lake Erie from April.

This is Ogdensburg Harbor as the sun began to set...

And this is Plum Island, NY from my sailing trip. I especially like that this photo shows the turbulence of Plum Gut.

Nice Greg! You got some great sky for that Grand Island shot. When we were there it was summer and the place was open. We even went inside the yacht club building. No one kicked us out. Actually we only saw one person and she said "Hi"!

Don't recall seeing that place in Mystic, neat.

Here's more...this is fun!

This one's for Darlene. I saw this faux lighthouse in Buffalo, hiding off the side of the road attached to a lonely looking building. There's a nice bikini-clad mannequin in the lantern, too. laugh

If you have ever been to Buffalo, you might have seen this big ship tied up next to some grain elevators and wondered about its story. This is the Aquarama/Marine Star. It was built as a liberty ship, but had very little service. It was a cruise ship on the Lakes for a while. In 1995, it was towed to Buffalo. I can see her sailing again, spruced up and ready to go...hopefully that will come before I see her as part of my Coke can. frown

Back to lighthouses...here's Braddock Point in Hilton, NY. This light used to be a very tall beautiful Victorian tower, but it was truncated in the 1950's by the USCG and deactivated. Each successive private owner has added a bit more to the tower.

This is Fort Niagara, NY from a different angle than you usually see...

And this is Crossover Island, NY. A large Laker happened to pass by at the time we were there, and I got some cool shots. This one has the entire island engulfed by the tanker.

Greg, I love all your pictures cool you are on a roll...keep'em coming. When I first saw the picture of Plum Island, NY I thought it was Sheffield Island in Norwalk, CT. until I looked at it closer. I bet they used the same builder. I have never seen it in person but have had some interest in it since of was born in Norwalk. Thanks again for posting some great pictures.

I remember the Aquarama. It operated as a ferry between Cleveland and Detroit -- It could hold 160 cars and 2500 passengers. Operating in the late 50s and early 60s.

Here\'s a story from 1995 published when it was moved from Windsor to Buffalo. Seems the owner had great plans to turn it into a floating casino.

I doubt they'll be able to make pop cans out of it, Greg -- it's steel, not alumninum. However as the original story noted, they might be able to make Toyotas out of it.

It looks rough now, but it was one cool looking ship after refitting for the Great Lakes.

Here\'s a painting of her by Marine Artist James Clary

OK now that Dave has taught me how, I will start to post pictures too! I don't have any new Lighthouse pics, but here are 3 from days gone by.

Can't remember for sure but I think this is Bloody Point, MD. I remember well takeing this pic it was late in the day Thanksgiving 2002. Had to walk on to privet property between two houses to get a look at this light. And was hopeing that no-one would want to shoot me for it as there where signs posted to keep out.

This is Cape St. George, FL taken in March 2003.

And this is in someones yard in Spring Hill, FL. Notice the details, people and all.

OK, I just typed an entire post, then pressed the little button that puts my laptop into standby mode. I have NO idea how to get OUT of standby, so I pressed every key, resulting in my post being turned into asfhj;tirgn//. UGH! OK, start again...

Nice photos, Stephanie! I hope that one day, I can replicate your photos of Cape St. George one day...that's the light I worry about every storm.

I have more photos to share...I'm addicted to this...it's so easy once you get the hang of it! I'm going to start going through all my CD-Rs of photos, so there's going to be a lot from one region.

Here's Beavertail, RI. Great light...one of my faves. An amazing setting.

Here's Bristol Ferry, RI, for a comparison to BobM's photo.

Thirdly, here's Clark's Point, MA, another favorite LH experience that I shall share once I am done reformatting my desktop and I don't have to deal with this tiny keyboard.

Shortcake, I bet the same person who showed you that Yard light in Spring Hill is the same person who showed it to me. Of course that person has since vanised off the face of the Earth.

But on to the question at hand. My last Lighthouse vist was a twofor. In the first Image if you look really carefully you can see both lights. Garden Key in the foreground and way off in the distance Loggerhead Key.

Man what a job on that Portland Head light! Amazing! I'll bet that place gets lots of lookers.

Eric, I'd love to be able to see those FL lights. However that would be more than a quick weekend trip for me so I'm sure glad you posted them.

Everyone, please keep your photos coming but it would be better to break them up into different threads as this one is getting to be pretty slow loading with all that's been posted.

I'm starting a thread called 'Greg's Photos", seeing as I am the main perpetrator in the photo field (I think I'm going nuts...I'm at 17 photos, plus a few scattered around. Who knew compression was THIS easy?! eek laugh )

If I have time, I'll try to transfer some of my photos in this thread, too, to ease the load time on this topic. smile
