Stan took this picture this morning from the bedroom window about 7:30AM

It proves the old saying:
Red sky at night, shepherds delight,
Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning

It is now 11:15AM and it is getting rough out there. The storms are gathering with force!

Great photo, Stan!

Where I grew up around the Great Lakes the expression was "Red Sky at night, sailors delight; red sky in the morning, sailors take warning." (Not many shepards where I grew up.)

Ever wonder what the logic is behind that saying?

Weather generally 'moves' from west to east because of the earth's rotation. If there are clouds in the sky to reflect the rising sun in the east (where it must be clear), it means that cloudy weather is moving into the area with the possibility of rain and storms.

If there are clouds in the sky to reflect the setting sun in the west, then an area of clearing is moving in to replace the clouds. Sailors will be happy.

John,
I grew up, in England, with shepards being the ones to take warning. Jim who grew up in New York always says Sailors - so it must be a UK v US thing!

Well I guess it is sailors AND shepherds ... and a few others too.

Thanks for the explanation John! Learnt something! I often wondered why it was said like that.

Hilari, where did you grow up?
I lived in Nottingham, which is classed as "up North" around here.

Margret,
I actually grew up just outside London, but my father was from Low Fell, near Newcastle, so we spent a lot of holidays up north with my grandparents.
