I don't recall if I ever posted this shot of the Jamestown Bridge demolition from April 2006. The Plum Beach Lighthouse was deemed obsolete and abandoned in 1941 after the opening of the original Jamestown Bridge. In the first photo, the old bridge comes down behind the new one, completed in 1992. The state ran out of money at that time, were supposed to take the old one down, but postponed it until they were forced to by the Coast Guard.
This summer I ventured out, waiting for some good light to show the the lighthouse and bridge. It took the demolition team almost 15 months to finally clear all their equipment from the demo site allowing this clean shot.
Unfortuantely, this past summer also saw a dramatic increase in number of cormorants living at the lighthouse. They've completely soiled the lower deck and roofline which aren't protected from the birds. Plans are now underway to place birdproofing on the prone areas, and the lighthouse will get a cleaning and new basement level coat of paint.
