John and I were boating at Lake Powell for the Memorial Day weekend with the kids. We decided to take the boat from the Antelope Marina in Page, AZ to Rainbow Bridge, NM. Unless you have a boat, it is difficult to drive to.

Rainbow Bridge has a span of 275 feet and is 290 feet high...about the height of the Statue of Liberty. It is the largest natural bridge in the world. It is made of Navajo sandstone and was formed from water flowing off the slopes of nearby Navajo Mountain. It is a geologic process completely different from that of an arch, which is eroded by wind and rain.

Rainbow Bridge is considered a sacred place by the western Indians.

If you look closely...you can see people by the side of the bridge...this kind of gives a perspective as to how huge it really is.

Great pics, Lorie! Interesting example of what spectacular work is done by Mother Nature.

The comparison of the people to the bridge in the second photo reveals how large this stone arch actually is. Thanks for pointing that out.

You really don't appreciate the size of the Rainbow Bridge until you see the people standing there. Actually, don't think I would ever had seen the people had Lorie not mentioned them.

Thanks Lorie for these beautiful photos!

They also bring back some lovely memories. I lived in New Mexico for 16 months and got to take a lot of road trips. As a native of Virginia, I was entranced by the colors.

My son was born at White Sands Missile Range, NM.

Judy,

Didn't they have any hospitals in NM way back when? laugh

Seriously, the photos are lovely. It reminds me of the area near Las Vegas. The formations are not quite so large but are similar to this in the coloration and other aspects.

Well, yeah. It was a very modern facility. I had all male nurses which was an interesting experience. We also lived at White Sands Missle Range, in a house, and bought groceries there in the commisary. laugh

Beautiful state...like a scene from an old western. Looking out our LR window, we could see mountains that were green near the bottom, orange/brown above that, and snow on the top year round. We had tumbleweeds and cacti. Temps could be in the 3 digits mid day, but comfortable because there was no humidity.

Lorie, any more photos? Those were great!

Thanks Judy. We have boated at Lake Powell for so many years that I didn't take any other pictures besides Rainbow Bridge on this trip. My son-in-law had never been to Rainbow Bridge so we took him, my daughter, and my 5 month old grandson for a boat cruise.

Lake Powell has lots of beautiful rock formations and canyons. I'll try and take more pics next time we are there.

P.S....Lake Powell is formed by the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River.

Go to Arches National park in Eastern Utah and you will see numerous arches. Art ;^)
