One very " Fierce Afternoon" ...sustained winds of 30 mph or so with gusts to 40+, horizontal sleet stinging you in the face, 10-12 foot waves from the NNW slamming into the pier at St Joe... This was shot at 1/500th sec in the shutter (S) priority mode at f/6.3, iso = 400 using a Nikon D2H with a Nikkor 300 mm f/4 AF-S lens giving an effective focal length of 450 mm. My kinda day...

Another super pic, Gary! How do you manage to keep your equipment dry and the lens filter free from drops of moisture? Another question, how cold does that water get? Bob

Fantastic picture Gary! Action all over the place. Definitely a WOW! in my book. Don't get that kind of action here in New ENgland, at least not while I'm out there. Bert

Looks like I missed a couple good gales while basking in the 85 degree Caribbean sun all last week...looking at these makes me shiver! As much as I love shooting in gales, the rest of this winter is going to stink in terms of temperature...

Bob, you don't keep the toys dry nor the filters free of droplets of water.... water was running down the filter at several points yesterday. You just have to stop, go back to the car, dry the filter, clean it, and resign yourself to getting it wet all over again if you want to keep shooting. Also a good time to dry off the camera body, the lens barrel, etc.
Right now the water temp is probably about 35 degrees or so... I won't be long before it starts to freeze on the catwalk. Probably this week as they're calling for nightly temps in the low 20s and highs only around freezing. There's also a major gale forecast for tomorrow... 40-60 mph winds and 16-18 foot waves are predicted!

Gary I think I'll just enjoy the show from home where it was sunny and 54 degrees today. That is just way too cold and wet for my liking. This latest photo reminds me of the one John and I have hanging in our office.

Very impressive! Your latest gale photos are spectacular. Yesterday I went for a walk when we had 50+ mph winds, and I thought of you photographing in those conditions. My face and lips are wind-burned today. The wind has died down, but it's very cold here. I can't imagine how cold it would be if we had snow on the ground.
As always, thanks for sharing your photos.
