I have begun to get back into lighthouse photography, and also to post again here. I'll try to post where I can help with general photography questions, and more images.

Ned,

Welcome back. That is one fantastic photo of Heceta Head. That Pacific Coast is one great place to get pictures. Thank you for sharing that great picture with us.

Welcome Back, Ned...

Love that shot, love that lighthouse. What are the specs on that shot, if you have them?

Thanks for sharing, Ned, when I shot from that spot a couple of years ago I wished I could add the sound of all of the Sea Lions to the picture!

Great Job! Welcome back Ned!

A little bit foggy on the day a couple of years ago!

Hi, thanks for the comments. I like yours, Paul, the fog is a great effect. This is a digital capture on a Canon Mark II at 70mm with the 24-70L. The exposure was f/22 at 6 seconds at ISO 50. My partners and I were shooting this into well after dark, making 30 minute exposures. The hardest part was timing the flash of the light and blocking it with our hands in an attempt to keep them from blowing out. We'll have to try it again and make it work.

Love that picture Ned. cool Every time I've been there I could only get a grey sky and the lighthouse didn't stand out very well because of that...Paul, your is nice too...even with the fog the lighthouse stands out well.

Heceta must be a favorite of a lot of photographers. The turn-out provides a fantastic place from which to capture a lighthouse 'in action.'

From October 5, 2003. The 'sweep' of the light was not a PhotoShop effect.

I also captured this as an mpeg movie, but I can't get it to display.

Ned, GORGEOUS shot (love your moody fog shot to, Paul)! I emailed you a couple weeks ago through your website. I'm coming out there April 14-25 and will be in Seattle staying with my sister, who just relocated there. My mom and I are making an overnight trip down to Oregon to do the coast lights and I am going to try and get a sunset at Heceta Head. We are going to overnight in Yachats. I'm also planning on hitting the Columbia River Gorge and all the cool waterfalls there. Good thing I'm shooting digital - for all the places I'm planning to visit, I think I'd be shooting 100+ rolls of film (although I'll still probably shoot a few for special spots)! laugh

Hi Jenifer,
I've been really bad about checking that email account, and I am afraid I missed your message - sorry about that. I think you will have a great time here. You might check this site out that I moderate: http://pacificnw.naturephotographers.net/ we have a very dynamic group that looks for any excuse to get out and shoot. If you are looking for anyone to help show you the area or to accompany, let me know. I'm up in the Gorge a lot, and can help out with locations. Your best luck on the coast will come if there is not a marine layer blocking the sunset. Right now the sun is setting a bit more to the south than ideal for this lighthouse, but I trust it will be getting better. Good luck, and if we don't meet, I look forward to seeing what you come back with.

April is my very favorite month to shoot sunsets in Michigan, besides October. The sun should be just about where I want it. Used to the marine layer from Lake Michigan. Perhaps a storm will blow in during the day and clear at sunset...in my dreams! I'll check out your forum - thanks for the link!

Ned,

Thank you so much for providing your link. Finally I can read something that I partially understand. Some of which, of course, I don't. But that's OK. I can learn. I'm such a novice that I won't even attempt to post my pictures.

Most of what I have read appears to have been written by people who talk down to the reader and who seem to be totally impressed by their innate knowledge and expertise. They are merely bragging about how much they think they know -- not much of a learning experience. Your site is not written than way. Thanks Again.
