The great lighthouse cruise!

Well, it would have been a great cruise if the weather had cooperated. We sailed out of Port Clyde on the Elizabeth Ann to visit 14 lighthouses from the water. Cruise was planned to last from 9:00 am to 6:00 p.m.

Number of lighthouses observed: 0, zero, zip, nada.

Incredible fog. You could certainly hear the fog horns at every lighthouse, but you couldn't see them.

Marianne, Carol Propst, and Sheila Hines sitting on the forecastle of the Elizabeth Ann. Notice the fog to the left.

After several failed sightings, the captain radioed to the other lighthouses and they were all fogged in. We cut the cruise short and were back at the dock by noon. Had a damp lunch on the dock. The cruise company voluteered to use their shuttle buses and take us to Marshall Point, which is close to the dock. Look at all that fog.

The keeper's quarters at Marshall Point. Notice the shuttle bus on the right.

The keeper's quarters taken from the door of the tower at Marshall Point.

I guess we should all pray for good weather in October; I am afraid that it will be much worse than this but am hoping for a miracle - and maybe, just maybe, sunny days? cool

Nice photos...definitely can see the dense fog. Too bad about the cruise being cut short and lack of lighthouse sightings, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
We always hope for nice weather but Mother Nature has a mind of her own doesn't she?

Man you sure seemed to have fog everywhere you went, Robert. Makes for some interesting pictures, but I still prefer the blue skies and puffy white clouds.....

Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.

My eye doctor, who grew up in Rockland, says that August and September have less fog than June. He didn't mention October so you people going to Portland will have to give us a report.

You can bet on a report - particularly if it is not good! Bad news seems to travel a lot faster than good. wink

Your group is certainly a dedicated to lighthouses even in that awful fog. smile

How great was that that they took you to at least one lighthouse. cool Hopefully your next trip there will be a better one.

That is so sad. We plan these lighthouse trips and wait for them to happen and then the fog rolls in. The anticapation is so great and it's
so disappointing after you have wited all this time. The last time I was ligjthousing in Maine,
on a cruise it was foggy and raining. They did get us in really close to the lights so we did get pictures, but they would have been so much nicer had the sun come out. I quess we were lucky to even see them.
I hope it's nice in October!
