I've been telling myself for the past couple weeks I wanted to get out to Big Sable. It has been over two years since I was last out there. A mile and three-quarter hike (one way) through snow was well worth the trip. These are a couple shots from my "adventure". My whole body is still a bit sore from going up and down the dunes for different perspectives laugh

This is three separate photos stitched together for the panoramic view from the top of the tallest dune I climbed (about 60-70 feet tall).

This is from in front of the breakwater wall in front of the light, normally a perspective I could not get, otherwise I'd be over my head in water!

Wonderful shots! I appreciate what you went through to get there. Its not an easy hike in the cold and wind.

Obviously, there wasn't a lot of people around, Jen. I was checking out the snow to see if there were a lot of footprints but didn't see any.

You did a great job composing those pictures. They are fabulous! Thank you for sharing them!

Beautiful Jen! Although the sunrise, sunset shots you and many other of our talented photographers come up with are super I still prefer the "bright sun, some clouds" variety. And it sure looks like you got a great day for them!

It sounds like you pulled a Jakers trick for at least one of them, walking out on the ice. eek

Thanks for taking the trek so we could all enjoy the pictures, Jen. Don't suppose there are too many people willing to make that hike! Maybe you could borrow a snowmobile next time... or snow shoes.

Stunning photos! You sound like me--I try to take photos of lighthouses from ALL angles. When I was in Maine last summer, I did that for Pemaquid and Portland Head (who knew I was a rockclimber!). I got some really interesting shots. It also makes for a fun experience! I like capturing a "different" angle.

Chuckle! Yes, you may use it for next quarter's forum banner, John. smile

Thanks for the nice comments! Dave, I don't think the state park would allow snowmobiles out there because of the fragility of the dunes. It really wasn't too bad of a walk. What was really funny was that my Nextel worked most of the way so I sat and chatted with my girlfriend for company!

Greg, in regards to "warmth" items, I was wearing two pairs of Microfleece under my full length wool coat. I was so hot I ended up stripping off my coat, hat, and gloves on the walk back! There was no shortage of warmth! laugh

I am going to try and get to Little Sable and White River next week if we get a nice sunny day. I really want to get up and start at Grand Traverse and work my way down the coast, catching Pt. Betsie, Frankfort, and Manistee. I have winter shots of all these already but most were on cloudy murky days. I still have a mental trip to the UP for Pt. Iriquois and Whitefish before the winter's out, too. smile

Ohhh..I meant those Thermacare heat wraps that are like hot/cold packs without the cold. But good to hear you were warm nonetheless! laugh

Jen, these are all post card shots. We've never been out there yet, but on one of our SW MI. trips we'll make it! ( must be the hike)

Great Pictures
I forgot how beautiful snow could be.
Haven't seen any in 18 years.

Awesome shots! It's quite different to see the light surrounded by snow. The walk out to Big Sable can be quite relaxing, but I know the temperatures up there have been a bit 'brisk' lately - no amount of warm woolies would convince ME to make that trek!

Thanks for sharing.

Jen, can you drive out there with 4WD? If so, when I visit it one day, having my dream super-lighthousingmobile Land Rover will help. laugh I may have to dream on with that...maybe my super-lighthousing hiking boots? wink

No-go on the drive, Greg. Walk only. I think twice a year they offer a "bus tour" out there - once in Spring and once in Fall.

If the beach hadn't been so icy I would have walked the beach back! smile

Looks like the sun is going to be out Wednesday. I'm tentatively planning on hitting Little Sable and White River...

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL Jen. John and I missed seeing that light last June because of the time it would take to make the hike out. We were trying to see as many lights as we could in one day. We'll have to get back there.
