You can't get to a lighthouse without a car. Yet we never try to get them in the photos. On my trip to Cape Cod a few weeks ago, I tried to get a few shots with the famous Land Rover in them. Here it is at Bass River (I blocked out the license plate for security):

I know some of us must have photos of our cars at lights. Share them with us! Prove you really were there! laugh

Ok Greg, you asked for it.

Here is my old convertable from the top of Crooked River lighthouse Florida.

Here is my truck in front of Oak Island Lighthouse North Carolina.

Well gee, I've always tryed not to get my car or other destracting objects in my lighthouse pictures. But here's one. At St. Marks, FL

Behind the man and the canoe you will see my old "No Brakes, Gas Guzzling, falling apart" Dodge Van (silver and burgundy).

Now if you asked for pictures with people in it... I have lots of those! laugh

Here's one more. Well, almost! Notice only the front end of my (new at the time) Toyota Corolla. Taken at St. Johns River Light, FL.

I think these are great. Lets see some more. It shows how it is not always that easy to get a great lighthouse photo. smile

Checked all my photo's that I can find and NO picture of any vehicle I've ever owned in any of them. Guess I'll run right out and take one with the new vehicle in the picture so I can post one. laugh

Believe that and I have a bridge for sale!

Here's one Rod Watson shot of Claudia Schiffer and I while we were on our vacation with the new Jag. Obviously, it was before they moved the lighthouse (and also before I woke up from the dream.)

If you have never been to St. Marks, it is a VERY hard light to photograph. It is close to the water, trees are close to it on all sides, and there are alway folks milling around.

As soon as I get a day off, I will start posting mine!

It makes alot of sense now, John. I was wondering why that model kept screaming and slapping the guy she was with. Did it hurt alot when the police pepper sprayed you?

I would never have thought about taking a lighthouse picture with my car in the picture. I guess it's because I've always been in a rental car when I'm out lighthousing. wink

I agree with you Lorie, I wouldn't have thought of taking a picture of a lighthouse with my car in it. I consider my car a valuable asset to get me where I want to go (Lighthouses), but I also conisder it clutter in one of my pictures.

I have been wanting to do this since I got my car, for I am obsessed with it. As soon as I get the chance, a photo will be taken and posted, cause somehow I don't think my backyard counts as a lighthouse... wink

Jake,

Maybe you could just put some of your lighthouses on the hood?

Can we count rentals as well, or does it have to be OUR car? Also, does the whole car have to be in it or just part of it?

Stephen,

I don't believe it really matters. Whether you own it, rented it, borrowed it or stole it -- makes no difference to me.

Anything counts, as long as you were driving or riding in the car. i.e. the car can't be one that just got in the way...it has to be yours, you had to be renting it, etc.

As for amount of car...hey, this can count:

I was trying to get a shot of the Coast Guard sign (I like to get shots of them) and got the front wing of the car in the photo. I may start another thread later for Coast Guard signs.

I'm not sure if these two truly qualify for this thread but they are the closest ones i have.

This one is of my rental car in front of a Faux Lighthouse near the Graumann Chinese Theate in Hollywood, CA.

This one is of some cars in front of an aptly named Coffe shop in Fairport Harbor, OH (location of two lighthouses).

Most of my car shots are on 35mm. I will have to scan them before I can post them.

I have some Coast Guard signs as well!

I don't know if I have any "car" shots or not. When I.O.'s been involved as the driver I've mostly had to tell him where to park in order to avoid getting the car into the pictures! laugh
Other people's cars, now that's another story! I'm sure we've all got a bunch of those. Maybe there should be a rule, "No parking within so many feet of a lighthouse"!

I don't think I have ANY photos of a lighthouse with our car in the frame. Huh. Never really thought about it before. I'm usually so enamored with the lighthouse, I try to avoid getting the car in the photo.

Round two! These are QUICK scans so they are not great in photo quality. I had to resize them to so I hope some of the lights are visible.

Assateague Island

Crooked River

Harbor of Refuge

Cape San Blas

Concord Point

More on the way....

I actually don't like to see any car in the way when I am photographing lighthouses

At Old Mackinac the cars are allowed to park in front of the lighthouse (parking available of course), but I find that is poor planning. There is plenty of space for non disabled parking available, but so many folks have to park as close as they can, without regard to the photographer!

I find them intrusive, and sometimes I wait for them to move. So, no, I wouldn't have them or mine in my photos.

Pam,

I completely understand. My car photos are a travel log for my truck showing where we have been in it.

The one thing I am liking about this thread is ithat is giving a sense of area and space to where the lighthouses are. Most of the time we try to get photos without roads, signs, etc. However, when you are forced to include these in photos when you want a car in them, they really give you a sense of what it is really like at the light. I have noticed that many times, when I have gone to a light that I have "envisioned" traveling to in my head as I planned and virtually took the trip in S&T, that the real area is nothing like what I thought. These photos are giving a unique perspective.

Seems that that one view of Nauset is quite popular. I would have liked to get that one. Then again, all the photos from it so far are in low sports cars...with the Rover, you would probably only be able to see the lantern.

Keep the photos coming! This is a very interesting thread, not only with the photos but with peoples' views on how they take photos. There are some psycholgists and sociologists that might be very interested in this! wink

I am going to create a Part II to this thread. I have had some people ask me to close this thread, as it is getting slow to load. However, I do not have thread closing capabilites in this forum. I will create a Part II, all I'll need is for a Saint or Jen to close this one for me. smile
