A nice shot I took at Castle Hill Light, R.I. It was a picture perfect (no pun intended) day and a local schooner really cooperated!
Actually, weeds can be your friend as the yellow really accents the picture nicely.

Nice compostion, wm! There are so many different angles of the landscape, angles of the sun, clouds/no clouds, dusk versus dawn, zoom in/zoom out, seasonal views, etc., that make lighthouse photography so interesting.

I was quite a comical situation for the picture. I saw the schooner was going to pass while up on the ridge - far elavated from the LH. It was a mad dash down, then around the rocks to try to get the schooner properly angled in the shot, as it disappeared behind the lighthouse. Each time I paused to take the photo, it was too late...I think I only got 3 shots but 2 of them were good.

Castle Hill is a good light to shoot. If you angle it right, you can get the Newport Bridge in the background of the shot as well, making some really nice shots, which I did.

The rest of my Castle Hill will be posted on my web site within the next few months. I am very backlogged with lighthouses to post. It is a very good problem! Will never complain!

The composition is excellent, "Bill" but the harsh light at what seems to be about mid-day is killing you. This would be a super composition with warm early morning or late evening light, whichever works at Castle Hill.

I usually plan the timing of my lighthouse trips by the amount of miles in between each one

Maybe I should give more consideration of optimum lighting scenarios.

I generally plan to be at wherever I'm going to shoot about 30-40 min before the light will be where I want it to be. Sometimes that means driving in the dark for hours.

When I was shooting dawns at Door County, Wisconsin last summer I was getting up at 3 AM to drive 90 min and hike about 15 min to be in position when the sun rose a little after 5:30 AM. Not a whole lot of fun some times to crawl out of that warm sleepin' bag, but the shots I got were more than worth it, soooooo.....

Keep shooting and posting! I'll post some sunrise shots at Big Red from the beach to the south that I shot last month. That's an angle seldom photographed courtesy of the discourtesy of the local residents who have the visitor's parking for the lighthouse behind a normally locked and unmanned guard shack. The object obviously being that the don't want anyone to use the lighthouse parking that the DNR probably made them put in so people could get to the lighthouse so they can have the entire area all to themselves. Oh well... they can't stop you from being determined and walking in to shoot! :0~
