Sorry for the delay in posting this part II, my stupid computer locked up (again) last night, and by the time it rebooted, I forgot what I had been doing.

We're sharing photos of our cars at lighthouses. Whatever you have...share it with us! It gives a unique perspective to that item which we need to get to a light, yet try not to get in the photo.

Gee, Stephen - that last photo at about 50 MPH while crossing the bridge? I think many of us have a similar photo - I know mine was thru the windshield with the focus set to infinity in the hopes it would take (no passenger to take the picture for me).

I'm curious as to why people block out their vehicle license plate in the pictures? I'm sure thousands of people see your plate every day in your travels. What difference does it make if it appears in a picture at the CF?

I would trust the members of this forum with my address and phone number (which is a good thing, because half of them are on the Board of a lighthouse group and have it anyway.). However, you really don't know who visits these forums who we don't know or want around. I decided that it was best to just block it out instead of take that risk.

Now, if I had a cool vanity plate, then I'd probably become known by it (I personally want to get one of those "Baymens Heritage" plates with CGRT on it...). However, a regular alphanumeric combo it just too much of a risk.

Actually, that is a still photo of the Newport News light. We stopped eventhough you are not allowed to.

As for blocking out the plates, that was done at the request of my girlfriend. That is what she asked me to do and that is what I did.

Finally went out the day after Thanksgiving to see the lights at Cape Cod again. While there I took pictures with the car in them.

This one is at Chatham and that's Sharon keeping warm. Lot's of people walking the beach but it was a cold wind.

This was at Nobska not too long before the sun went down. Just noticed, that's my shadow at the bottom right.

Bert,

I notice that your license plate matches your screen name. Nice.

My Texas plate was my name.

Well, it's not a lighthouse, but it's really close to the water!

That's my car with the Toronto skyline in the background this past Sunday. Big contrast from the rain that greeted us coming in!

And just for fun, here's one of just the CN Tower. At 1,815 feet five inches, it is the Tallest Building and Free-Standing Structure in the World, and in 1995 it was named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Just found a second one of Nick, my car and a lighthouse. This was on Nick's first visit to a lighthouse. A couple years ago.

Very cool, Ron. That mode of transportation must give you the opportunity to collect some great pictures!

Stephanie,

I'd center your search in Canadian Lighthouses to start with- for two reasons.

1. The color scheme

2. Ron has made his passion for Canadian Lighthouses be well known on the Forums.

I'm not sure why but I'd start in the Great Lakes area.

Mombo,

I took your hint and searched and it looks like my suspicions were correct- on both counts.

I thought I had seen a picture of that lighthouse before.

Here's two more from the OBX over New Years of our new (then) GMC Yukon.

In front of Wash Woods LSS:

And at Currituck. It was kind of hard to fit everything in this frame, especially as I was standing in mud.

Hey Greg, ...I thought you were Land Rover people? What's with the Yukon?

We were, and are, Rover people. In fact, we almost bought a 2004 Discovery to replace our 01, which the Yukon replaced.

Our 01 had had too many tech failures, such as the air suspension that kept on deflating, making our car look like some low rider, except for it was only low in the back. We pretty much loaded the car when we got it, and regretted it later.

Basically, to make a really long story short, we went to the Rover dealer, test drove the new LR3 Disco replacement, and asked for quotes on the 04 Disco and 05 LR3. Both were much more than we wanted to pay, especially for the outgoing Discovery. We walked out in disgust.

The next day, we went to the GMC dealer. We've always wanted a Yukon, at least as a second car for hauling. We test drove it, and fell in love. We got a loaded demo for a great price.

So, that's basically the story. I still love Rovers, and I'm supposed to get the famous 94 Consiston Green one next year. But, for general family purposes, a Yukon proved to be the much better choice.

I'll make up for it all when I'm the host of the Today Show and have a barn-sized garage of classic Rovers. laugh

Bringing this old thread back to the top with a new picture.

Here's one with a bunch of WACKO cars. Some owned, some rented.

This was taken at Southwest Reef Light in Berwick, LA Sat. afternoon after the Regional in New Orleans 06-07-08.

Dang...this just made me read things I wrote three years ago. I tend to avoid reading things I wrote more than a few months prior. :p

Wish I was there to fill in that lineup...especially as I'm regretting more now that I couldn't make the NO trip.

But, I do have a picture of my oft-mentioned (especially in the gas price thread) 1993 Range Rover, during my whirlwind Cape/Vineyard/Nantucket trip over the May/June weekend. This was 6:45 AM on Saturday 31 May, when I stopped at Nobska on my way to the ferry to Martha's Vineyard. The bike on the back is the "bonus round" -- my transport on the islands.

(Edit: Just zipped up the thread to find that Bert posted a picture of the same light, same lot, three years ago. An exam will be given later on the differences at the station over that period.)

This is our rental car in front of the Serio Colorado lighthouse in Aruba in 2006 when we were there on the Holland American cruise ship Maasdam.

When we got off the ship, the taxi drivers only wanted to take us to the California lighthouse (named for the wreck of a ship named California) where he went last time. They insisted that there was no lighthouse at Serio Colorado, and that it would take an hour to go down there and an hour to come back. They wanted $40 and hour to take us there and another $40 to bring us back.

In addition to looking up the lighthouses, I had looked up the rental car rates, and we could have pre-booked on the internet for $32/day. But Bob had been against that, even though they drive on the right. When he heard what the taxi drivers wanted, he decided that renting a car was a good idea after all. So we went back to the car rental places at the dock. The first one in the line was Hertz and the lady was saying that she had only one car, a station wagon. Other people who had been asking her apparently wanted a smaller car, and also wanted to keep it to 8 or 9 oclock (the boat didn't leave until 10 pm). So they left.

I asked how much it was ($60) and whether she would give us a AAA discount which was in the AAA book. She said she would give us 5%, and did we want the car. I said yes. The other people came back and were negotiating with her also, and she asked if we were together. I said no. We got the car and they didn't.

We drove south (it is easy to drive along the west side of the island) while I was trying to decipher the road signs. Some were easy to figure out (stop, no left turn), but some were unfamiliar to me. A yellow/orange diamond meant that it was a right-of-way road. A triangle bordered in red with a big black vertical line with a little cross in the middle mean that you have the right of way at the intersection.

I had a little difficulty with the frequently seen signs that had two cars next to each other, the right one black and the left one red. I discovered that this one meant "No passing". And a dark blue circle rimmed in red with a red slash across it was "No Stopping or Parking".

First we went around the oil refinery which took up almost the whole west side of the south end of the island. The little town of Serio Colorado was almost completely engulfed by it and we never did get to it. We knew that Baby Beach (so called because the shallow water goes out a long way) was in the area, and we headed in that direction.

When we got to the coast, we saw a large red anchor, and we could see the lighthouse from here, so we headed for it. The road was indeed narrow and surprisingly winding considering that Aruba is such a flat island.

It was a very arid area. I saw at least two kinds of lizards - one brown and one a brilliant teal. They were very hard to take a picture of because they moved so fast (as I would if I was barefoot on the hot ground). The rocks were a rusty color - it was almost as though the ground was made of iron which had rusted.

In addition to the pipe organ cactus and the prickly pear cactus there appeared to be two barrel shaped cactus, and we even saw several different birds. One was a dove type bird and the other one looked sort of like a Baltimore oriole in that it had some orange on it. I think it was a Scotts Oriole.

After we went to the collapsed Natural Bridge and had a bite to eat, we did drive up to the California lighthouse - this isn't our car in front of it but it is FROM our car.
