What does one do on a cold and very windy day in Rhode Island when there is a beautiful sky. Here it is! BEAVERTAIL IN THE SNOW. THE RUINS OF WHALE ROCK LIGHTHOUSE DESTROYED BY HURRICANE OF 1938 DUTCH ISLAND LIGHT CONANICUT LIGHT FROM THE STREET CONANICUT LIGHT FROM THE BEACH PLUM BEACH FROM THE BRIDGE. Also got some long shots of Castle Hill and Rose Island. All but Conanicut and Plum Beach were taken from the comfort of the front seat of my SUV. Bert

Bert... I love the contrast with the snow on the ground, especially how it shows up against the red building. I'm glad it's you going out in those cold temps. I am a whimp...anything below 80 degress and I start to get cold.

Bert, that's a long cold walk out the bridge to get those Plum Beach shots. Nice job on all the pictures, thanks for sharing.

Love your Pics. Love R.I. You can walk across the bridge to get a better shot of Conanicut? Next time I have to do it. My husband thinks I'm nuts to walk bridges, pass those closed gates, climb rocks. Anything for the best shot. But age is catching up.

Bert,
While all the pictures are good, the beach shot of Conanicut was even better, giving me a new appreciation for a lighthouse that was only a "done that" notation in my logs.
Thanks for sharing them.

Fran, I agree with you! If you want the pictures you have to get out there up close and personal as I call it. The walk on the bridge isn't that bad. You're well protected from the traffic. Traffic does fly by though. Bert

Fabulous shot of Conanicut, Bert. I've never seen such close up shots of that one. You're ready for the big time! Bob

Barry and Fran I really like to get out to these lights in the winter when I can. I find that people are much more tolerant (if that's the right word) of someone wanting to take pictures. In the summer I think too many people want pictures and the owners do not appreciated it when the lights are privately owned. That beach shot was only possible becuse the tide was out. Another thing to keep in mind when one expects to walk the beach to get a picture. Bert

Nice pics Bert!! The one of the Whale Rock ruins looks more like a damaged submarine limping back to home port (or sitting on the bottom in shallow water). I haven't been able to get out to Plum Beach since it got a new life, but hope to in the near future. Thanks for sharing your colorful pics.

I'm new to this forum, but not new to lighthouses. Currently I sit as the president of the Friends of Plum Beach Lighthouse and would like to share several recent photos of the newly renovated lighthouse, but I'm somewhat confused about how to do so on this site. Can anyone help me? I hope it is as simple as clicking and dragging the shots, but it doesn't appear to be that easy.

Hi Dave, ...I for one would love to see your photos especially some of what's been done to the interior of the light, if you have some. Bob

Thank you to everyone for your welcoming notices to me. It will take me a little bit of time to wind my way through the forums and their way of doing things, but please give me some time. I'm much more used to the click and drag routine of the Mac world and the method here of uploading images will take a bit of training for my simple mind. I got involved with the Friends of Plum Beach Lighthouse at first on a visual level--I work professionally as a network tv cameraman who happens to live in North Kingstown where the abandoned lighthouse embarrassed most of us. When it was announced that the light was top be renovated, I jumped in shooting a documentary about the project. As it neared completion, the contractor kept turning to me for advice, I in turn went to the group with his ideas. One thing led to another, I helped start the website, printed brochures, had shirts, tee shirts and hats embroidered, finished the documentary, then the next thing I know I'm the president. It takes up a fair amount of my free time when I'm not traveling to cover news or sporting events, but it is worth it. Once I get the system here down, I'll attempt to post some oif the roughly 2000 digital jpegs I have taken of the lighthouse, both inside and out, during the past 2 years. Thanks again for your wlecoming emails. David Zapatka---www.plumbeachlighthouse.org or check out www.millcove.com which is my business website.

By the way, the remains of the Whale Rock Lighthouse were discovered this past summer in about 80 feet of water and the group doing the diving are hoping this coming summer to raise several of the pieces and creat a documentary about the lighthouse and its history.

Dave, Great account fo what you do as a tv cameraman and what you ended up doing for Plum Beach light. I'm sure that it takes up loads of your time. Please feel free to get hold of me if you need any help with anything. I've been getting a few bits and pieces about the Whale Rock Light being found. I will certainly be watching and waiting for any news. Seems to me there may be a Fresnel lens down there somewhere to be found. An unfortunate loss. Bert

Very, very interesting! I also pass the remains of Whale Rock everytime I exit the bay through the west passage. I knew a hurricane destroyed the former light but I didn't realize the remains, or part of them, were still on location. I own a replica of Whale Rock Light. I'll try to find some time to take a pic or two and post it. I don't know how accurate the replica is but we'll find out. Bob

Bob Here is a picture from the Coast Guard Archives of Whale Rock Light. I have a postcard that shows it as being black. Interesting! Bert

The replica I purchased from an area store has the lighthouse painted green. I don't know what period of time is represented by the replica I have. Bert, I also have a postcard depicting the light painted black. Bob
