I was fortunate enough to get this shot of a ferry going down the Thames River leaving New London Harbor and passing the old lighthouse on Pequot Avenue. I like it and wanted to share it with all of you.

Unfortunately, only about 20% of your picture loaded and then it stopped downloading. My computer is brand new so I have to assume there is a problem else where? Has anyone else had this problem with Ron's photo?

Ron,

I see the same thing that Bob and Cathy do. Just the very top of the lighthouse and a few tree branches.

Sorry for the "sneak peek" of the image. I uploaded it again this morning and now it seems to be working. I have always had trouble with this sort of thing here and so don't often post images. I should practice more often.

Really nice shot, Ron, that's a lighthouse that I wish Harbour Lights would make.. We have been by it three or four times now... a couple of times on a ferry like that out to Block Island and back!

Great shot! HL hasn't made this one yet?! This is a staple of lighthouses!

Of course, that obnoxious woman who lives in the keepers house probably won't let them in to photograph.

Don't feel bad, Ron. Now that makes six of us who don't, won't, or seldom post images. I sure hope the powers that be will take note and put together some type of seminar ar the Reunion covering this exasperating process.

You never really see many good photos of this particular light.

You captured a beauty here. I really like your contrast of light and dark, along with a nice composition. It's not overly saturated either. A definite keeper. Excellent job, Ron!

Ron,

I see it now, too.

I think the leaf-less (leaves-less?) trees add so much to the shot ... and I agree with Rod, the lighthing of the tower is near-perfect.

And, who doesn't like the compliant ferry as well.

Thanks much for sharing ...

Barry

The tower and lanternroom seem to be in really good condition, Ron, is that indeed the case? Who takes care of the light?

Very nice picture Ron and great fortune in having the ferry cooperate. My question is: Is that as close as one can get to the light? I understand that the property its on is private. Is that the case?

Thanks for sharing the pictures, Ron.

As I recall reading not too long ago, the light was recently repainted by the CG.

Went and looked at the Lighthouse Directory (Rowlett's site) and found:
Quote:
In 2002 the lighthouse was repainted by the crew of the Coast Guard icebreaker Penobscot Bay.

Barry,

Merriam-Webster Dictionary spells it leafless.

Excellent photo, Ron!

I love the bare branches framing the tower. I seem to remember you have a pair of pictures of this lighthouse taken decades apart. Right?

"No Photos"? For you to read the sign, you must still be on public property. You are not tresspassing when you're on public property unless that public property is posted "no Tresspassing" for some reason. I don't think any private citizen has the legal right to prevent you from taking pics of things that are in your view when you have a legal right to be where you are. They could put up barriers to prevent pics being taken but I would say if you can see it, you can photograph it.

 Bob

Sandy,

Thanks for the info.

Actually, I was going to go for the continental touch and say "sans l'oeufs" Then, as I showed my wife, she gently repled that that meant "Without eggs." wink

Oh well.

Sorry that I have not responded earlier, but I have been busy with work and getting ready to make a trip to Oregon and California next week.

Yes, the elderly lady who lives in the house, Alice Dimmock, does not like for people to stop and try to get pictures. I appreciate this but, as many have said here, if you are on public property then you have the right to take a picture. The image of the lighthouse belongs to all of us.

Even though the tower was painted by the USCG crew recently, it is now in need of more work on the north and northwest sides. At present the Coast Guard takes care of the tower but it is my understanding that the New London Maritime Society, the non-profit folks who run the Customs House in New London, were applying for ownership. The USCG is divesting itself of this lighthouse (as with many others as you know).

I, too, wish Harbour Lights would do this lighthouse. This station is the fourth lighthouse station in all the U.S. (following Boston, Beavertail & Brant Point). I think it would look nice with a submarine going by it and the keeper waving to crew members on top of the sub.

I was luck to get the ferry passing as I had already packed it up and was heading home when I saw the ferry going down the river. I did a 180 and set up again in time for this shot. The leafless trees do add to the shot and let enough light in so it is not too dark.

I thank you all for sharing your comments and I look forward to being able to post more images in the future, as well as view your work.
