It's been since February since I've hiked out to Big Sable. Thought I would post a shot I took tonight. I had never been out there at sunset, so I've also never seen the lantern room lit. She sure was pretty tonight! Man that walk is long when you're carrying a 30 pound backpack though... This is a four second exposure at F32 about 15 minutes after sunset. The beach had large puddles everywhere due to the large amount of rainfall we have had the last three weeks. Made for some great reflection shots!

Jen, that is an absolutely beautiful shot. I haven't been up there for almost three years now, and never at sunset. I think I'll have to make a trip this fall.

Thanks! Here is another shot, taken about 45 minutes after sunset. 30 second exposure at F16.

Beautiful Jen. What's the red light coming off the building?

There are a couple old-fashioned "pole lights" around the lighthouse that are orange in color. I almost wish they weren't there!

I think the "orange" light adds a little interest to the keeper's quarters as your eyes pass by from the lantern room on the way to the reflection. The first one is also interesting, seeing just the little pinpoint light in the reflection.

Nice shots! How was hiking back in the dark? I was thinking of going out there last night, but didn't want to hike in the dark without a flashlight.

Are you in Michigan? Where are you staying? I hiked the beach both ways. No way was I hiking the trail at night. I keep a small maglight in my pack. It wasn't too bad along the beach. I did hear a coyote howl when I got back to my car about 10:30pm though!

Nicely done. Plenty of bears roaming around there. - Dan Sheehan

I was in Michigan June 1st-6th. I took the Badger carferry back to Wisconsin on Sunday the 6th.
I arrived in Ludington before 7:00 p.m. on Saturday June 5th and did consider going to Big Sable. Instead I waited for the sun to set on Ludington light.
I was at the Point Betsie transfer ceremony until 4:00 p.m. and stopped in Frankfort and Manistee lights on the way to Ludington.
