Yesterday, I received my first issue of the HL Legacy via e-mail. The one thing I didn't consider when signing up for it by e-mail was how painfully slow it would be to load. It is 12 pages with lots of photos. I still have the old dial-up format and had to continually wait for each page to load.

Before I get bombarded with why I don't have high speed access, let me explain my situation. I live at the end of a private road that you have to cross a bridge over a creek and have about a 600 foot driveway to get to my house. On my side of the creek, there is no access to DSL from the phone company or even cable. I have satelite receivers on my home but hate the price of another $70+ a month for the high speed access on the dish.

Anyway, it was nice getting to be one of the first people to get to read it and see some fun pictures from the Door County event that John and I attended.

Hi Lorie, ...I'm still on dial-up and have no intentions of changing to high speed. I can see where the downloading of the Legacy would take quite a bit of time on dial-up. Twelve pages with lots of pictures is quite an enormous file.

I'll stay with dial-up. It works very well for what I do at home on my computer. Life goes by fast enough. I just wish I could slow it down. Like Alabama sang, ..."All I really got to do is live and die, and I'm in a hurry and I don't know why."

Lori, you didn’t mention the quality of the pictures. Our Legacy came in yesterday. I downloaded it at work and at home. We do have DSL at home, so the download was pretty fast. I was very disappointed with the overall quality. On screen, the text is clear and sharp, but the pictures are so pixilated it’s almost impossible to recognize anyone. frown
We do have Adobe Acrobat 5.0, which may or may not be the latest version. Maybe that’s a problem. (Tom is off in Iowa shooting a wedding, so he hasn’t seen it yet. He is the computer expert and would know if it was a problem with our software or whatever.)

It was nice receiving the advance copy, but I’m glad Tom will still receive the hard copy of the Legacy under his membership. smile

Apparently those receiving the e-mail copy will still receive a snail mail package with all of the enclosures, etc.

The quality of my e-mail Legacy was also very poor. Don't think it's your computer Joyce.

Joyce...I didn't even try to print a copy off the e-mail. I figured the whole reason I signed up for the online Legacy was to eliminate more papers to store. Anyway, the text and pictures were clear and readable except for the text about a Maine lighthouse trip for next June. I could hardly read any of that information.

If HL is going to be sending out an additional packet with enclosures, it kind of seems like they are defeating the purpose of an online Legacy to cut down on costs. eek

I would image the most expensive part of the Legacy mailing is the cost of printing the 12 page Legacy. The snail mail will only include the "other stuff", so they save that printing cost. They will also save a little on postage, by not including the 12 page Legacy and not using a 9x12 envelope.

Good Morning Everyone,

I managed to take a look at the electronic version of the Legacy. I can hardly wait for my HARD COPY.

Currently I'm using my cable company for transmission, but the Legacy, though faster than the speed of light, was virtually unreadable.

Even though I love electronics and the newest inventions, I'll stick with the hard copy.

The reason that pictures are not showing up very good is probably due to the fact that the images/document were made for web/pc viewing and not printing.

Most PC monitors have a max ppi (pixels per inch) value of around 72. Most printers have a dpi (dots per inch) value of at least 150. I know my printer prints out at 244 dpi. It is because of this difference between the two numbers that the images appear pixelated and do not display correctly.

Bryan,
I guess my original posting wasn't clear. shocked The quality is poor when viewed on the monitor. Tried printing at 300 dpi and its just as bad. We get pdf files quite often with pictures. They are clear and sharp on the pc monitor and print the same.

Just got back on line from being away on Saturday and recovering on Sunday.

Bob, you're an ALABAMA fan. So I'm I. I've gone to their concerts up and down the Mid-Atlantic coast and been to see them at Myrtle Beach at least 3 times, and have had my picture taken with Randy. Oops, this is a lighthouse topic.

I didn't sign up for the email. Thought I would just wait for it to arrive via mail. Any information that I need to know ahead of time, I will surely read on the Forums.

Good Point, Pam.

Like I mentioned before, I'll stick with the hard copy of the Legacy. Of course, I haven't received mine yet either. Just bad timing?

Both Tom and I received a hard copy of Legacy in the mail today. So now we have the poor quality e-mail version and two high quality hard copies. smile Maybe HL checked the quality of the e-mail version and decided to send a hard copy. Has anyone else received both the e-mail version and a hard copy version?

When I received the e-mail link for the Legacy, the e-mail also said they were sending a hard copy in addition this issue because of the inserts.
