From Exit 100A on the GSP ...
Great tour of Coastal NJ ...
Twin Lights has been my favorite since fourth grade ... as good as that shot is, you need to see it up close ... lots and lots of architecture going on here ...
Thanks for sharing the day.

I'm glad you now have a handle on the picture posting process, Sandy. Thanks for sharing the first part of your NJ trip. Looks like they need to powerwash poor Sandy Hook.

Bert,
Plan it for the third weekend in October and do the NJ Lighthouse Challenge- the first and the best of the challenges!
Esther and I will be at Sea Girt as a NJLHS Volunteer on Sunday afternoon. Greg will be there all day on sunday, I believe.
Drive down and start on the Delaware River and stay overnight near AC or Barnegat and finish up in Sandy Hook on Sunday.
It's a great weekend trip. You probably can't get a Cape May Whale Watcher Cruise in then but that will give you a reason to spend the weekend in the Cape May area at another time.

I'm going to "attempt" to get out there this fall to visit my aunt and uncle, who just moved there...depends on $$, and also on how the new baby rides in the car!

Barry, we did drive over to Navesink and got some closeups. Stan climbed the North Tower and got the South Tower from that angle. We walked the grounds and got a picture of Sandy Hook from Navesink. The photo I posted here of Navesink was taken from the car as we left Fort Hancock (Sandy Hook). Glad we did that because we couldn't find a place to stand at Navesink where both towers could be photographed. (Didn't feel it necessary to post the two shots of my side-view mirror showing me holding the camera, but you get the picture--Stan's much better at pictures.) Saturday afternoon found us aboard the Cape May Whale Watcher for a 5-hour Delaware Bay cruise in spectacular weather. . . . Brandywine Shoal, New Jersey: 14' Shoal--we could smell the newly painted LH. Named for the shoal there that averages 14' in height. Miah Maull Shoal--captain says the paint used is fire engine red! Sun really does a number on that color. Named for Jeremiah Maull per captain--will have to research why. Cross Ledge remains: Elbow of Cross Ledge: Ship John Shoal, Delaware (named for Ship John, a ship that sank at that site) Returned to dock at 6 PM or so and took advantage of the late-setting sun to photograph these two. . . . East Point Ludlum Beach (reconfigured). Trust me people, these are the remains of a LH that is now located in Sea Isle, NJ at 3414 Landis Avenue. Refer to America's Atlantic Coast Lighthouses 5th Edition, page 117 for details: Traveled to and photographed eleven lighthouses on a spectacular Saturday. Will post the remaining three that we shot on our way home on Sunday.

Sandy,
Some nice photos yout took.
Did you go down to the beach next to the Marina in south amboy for Great Beds? or did you take it from a different spot.
There's a restaurant just down the street from thater called Harbor Lights. The food's not bad. We ate there a couple of years ago after visitng Great Beds.
Glad you enjoyed most of your visit to NJ.

Took Great Beds from a parking area near the marina--wasn't a great picture, but Stan pushed a few magic buttons and made it viewable. A young man spending his day off visiting lighthouses suggested that we make a point of visiting Lucy the Elephant when we met up with him at Navesink. Slipped my mind completely until it was brought up here--knew I forgot to do something!! Thanks for the "atta girl"--will pass along your comments to the photographer.

These pictures are fantastic... we are getting more and more green with envy! By the way Miah Maull Shoal was named for Nehemiah Maull, who was drowned near the site. Our favourite sorce for information on lighthouses is The Lighthouse Directory and that is where we found this snippit of information too! This is a fantastic resource and we hope we will be able to contribute some more to it. (if you look for some of the Englisch Shouth West Lighthouses, you will be linked to our pages ) )

For those trying to figure out how Ludlam Beach was, picture the building without the screened porch and all the picture windows, also picture a square tower centered on the roof. Old Picture: Side View Old Picture: Front View Great pictures Sandy, I've always found East Point to be interesting, with such a new tower on top of an old weathered building. BTW, did you get to go inside the Navesink lights?

Zachery, Stan's the climber and photographer. He climbed the right tower and took this picture of the left tower:

Sandy,
Although I love lighthouses, I think that I would have been severely tempted to stay with your Mom in Atlantic City.
I'm not much of a gambler, but I do enjoy watching the people. That's why I probably prefer photos with the people in front of the lighthouses. I gues that I'm the only one who appreciates the folks involved.

Great shots! It is a good tour of the Delaware Bay lights. I noticed that the upper door on Miah Maull is STILL open THREE years later.

Bob, I usually stumble upon cruise information while looking for cruises offered in areas where we plan to vacation. That particular one is, I believe, offered bimonthly and I recommend it highly. Captain wasn't a nonstop yapper and a very substantial lunch was included in the price of the reservations. As you can probably tell from the pictures, he pulled the boat close to each lighthouse and circled each one so everyone on board got a chance to see. Let me know if you need specifics on how to contact them, etc. and I'll search for phone numbers, etc. Sandy
