I have a substantial number of photographic projects going on at the moment that is prompting me to sift thorugh my slide files, which has led to me scanning some images that I didn't previously have digital. I've been concentrating on Marblehead Lighthouse today, so I thought I'd share a few of those images as I get them done with the folks here on the CF.

This first one was taken one morning in the summer a couple of years ago. A thunderstorm was already building in the morning before dawn on a sultry morning. I kept on photographing and was treated to a spectacular display of fanciful clouds that eventually built into a massive thunderhead that led to a torrential downpour... oh well... eveyone has to get a little wet once in a while...

More images coming later today after I upload some to www.clubphoto.com.

I tend to photograph long before/after other photographers have started or given it up for the day. Here are a couple of photos of Marblehead shot from the lighthouse grounds in the early predawn... these were probably shot 45 min or so before sunrise.

The long exposures to bring up the colors allow the clouds to move and give a sort of blurry/whispy appearance.

I'm a sucker for pano crops...

This next pair of photos were taken around dawn one morning. If you look carefully at the first one, you can see a photographer with his tripod set up on the point to the left of the lighthouse getting ready to photograph the sunrise. I don't know what he got, but I think I prefer my vantage point and subject.

I hope you all enjoy these. There will be one more set coming that were long exposure shot in the early predawn to give a lot of reciprocity failure color shifts.

These were all shot the same morning and were taken in the order that they're posted here. These started with exposures in the range of about 2-4 minutes and were shot on Fuji Velvia. That tends to shift colors into the blue/purple color group.

That's all folks... hope you all enjoy these shots of Marbhlehead.

This is a test of John's new URL system for uploading files to post to the CF.

Looks like everything works pretty much as advertised, John. I would recommend that folks create a folder on their hard drive and save the images that they're uploading via this route in that folder. Then, when they want to get the URL to their image, they can enter all of the boiler plate, their e-mail address, and just paste the file name on at the very end.

I don't mind at all, Bert. I'm glad to be able to share these with folks on the CF, and if it gives folks ideas on improving their own photography, so much the better!

Gary, those clouds in the first few shots were great! I haven't as yet tried the long exposures, but I did shoot some Velvia this morning and am anxious to see how it turns out. ( I was there this morning) Great shots!

Wow eek ,

I can't believe the shots you get. I agree your vantage point is much better than the photographer in the picture. I especially like the second shot in that set with the sun shining on the lighthouse. outstanding!

Here are a few more dawn shots. Actually, to be candid, I'd forgotten even taking these slides! I guess that's not too hard to fathom, given that I have about 10,000 lighthouse slides in my files.

Here's another dawn shot to start with...

And a couple of shots taken in more "normal" light on different days.

Gary

P.S.

This post, John, if you happen by, was also a test to URL link images from multiple sites onto a single thread, and it worked fine, as I would have expected.

Excellent shots, Gary! Great composition, and your colors are amazing!

In the first set, where were you standing? I need to steal - uh, borrow - some of your secrets. :p

Kent, as you head out toward the lighthouse from the town of Marblehead, the road makes a sharp right. On the left are some expensive new summer homes a short distance on the left after you make the sharp turn. Before those were built, you could walk out the little road to the stone jetty that protects a few boat docks. That first group of shots were taken from there. While the houses were being built, there were no trespassing signs up, no doubt to secure the view for those who were/will reside there and to exclude people wanting a different vantage point to see the lighthouse from. I don't know if access is still restricted or not. Bud Schrader has been there more recently than I have... last weekend, in fact. Perhaps Bud knows if the vantage point that I shot from is still accessible or not. Hope that this helps some.

Gary, I've never tried shooting from that spot, so I don't know if it's accessable or not- I'll for sure pay more attention next trip, I like that perspective. My dad just bought a boat, I'm going to try to get him to take it up so I can shoot from off-shore. ( my dad is about to turn78)
