Here are some pictures that I took either Sunday or Monday, I can't remember which day I went. Anyway armed with some tips and advice from Gary and a new book I thought I would try some fully manual pictures (for the first time) here's some of the stuff since I wrote down all the info to keep track. 80x200mm lens 1/30th a F22 using a 2X, 80x200mm lens set at F32, so that would be F64? eh... 1 second anyway Sun directly behind the lighthouse.... a little under exposed, but kinda interesting. with the 2X, lens set at F22, so 1/15th at F22/F44? Under exposed again, for some reason this looks brighter in Photoshop than with my browser, In Photoshop the cat walk is silhouetted to the end, but with my browser only about halfway so I don't know how it looks on your end (maybe its my moniter?) 2X, 80x200mm lens set at F22, so 1/8th at F22/44 Feel free to critique, I am just trying stuff to see what works and what don't I have not adjusted any color, contrast, or anything else except remove the dust spots, and they are not in order I stacked them best on top (in my opinion)

After I posted this last night I started thinking that I scanned more than 4 pictures, so I went back and found that I had one more, I can't believe I forgot this one I am starting to think my memory is going. 2X 80x200 lens set at F22 - 1 second at F22/44

Mark, Michigan City looks like THE place to be at sunset. What film did you use? tripod? I like the reds. Good job!

The last one's probably the best, Mark, although by working with them in Photoshop or another of the image processing programs, you can bring up the brightness on some of the darker ones if need be to make them show better on here.
Excellent shots... good light to be sure!
As for f-stops... the whole stops run 11, 16, 22, 32, 48, 64. So, if you're at f22 with a 2X that's going to move you to an effective f-stop of f 48 not rather than simply multiplying the f22 x 2. Sorry about that but I didn't set up the numbers, honest. They're the ratio of aperature to focal length and just work out, it seems, for maximum inconvenience in terms of remembering them!

Wow! I think I'm moving to Michigan! Are there any houses for sale by you? To say the least - the last one is my FAVORITE! I don't know about all the numbers you typed, but I think the picture are wonderful anyways! I can't wait to see that Lighthouse for myself. I'm sure my pictures won't come out that good though! Thanks for the wonderful pictures! I love them. BJE

We boat out of Michigan City and have seen many of these beautiful sunsets on the lake. They are beyond word description. John & Mary P.S. BJE - Michigan City is in Indiana. I know it is confusing. There is also an East Chicago and New Chicago also in Indiana!!! No wonder people get lost traveling in Indiana!!!

Thanks everybody for the kind words,
Bud, I did use a tripod, and the film was Fuji Provia 100, and as far as Michigan City being the place to be at sunset, time is running out for this year. The tripod was at the waters edge and sometimes in the waters edge and the sun is moving to the left daily, by January the sun will be so far to the left side you'll need a wide angle lens to even get it in the picture with the lighthouse.
Gary, I didn't want to adjust the color just yet in case you or anyone else had any additional pointers on mistakes or what might have helped, pictures 3 and 4 needed longer exposures, #3 was 1/15th @ F48 probably should have been 1/2 to a full second @ F48 judging by the success of picture #5 #4 was 1/8th @ F48 and I think that one probably should have been 1/2 @ F48
All in all I am happy with how they turned out as it gives me a little more idea as to how to approach it next time.

Mark, for a 1st try at manual photos, I think you did very well. Gary is right about the last one being the best, but he's also right about being able to adjust them in Photoshop to lighten them. Those little circles in the 1st one can easily be cloned out also. Good job and I'll look forward to seeing more as you take them.
