Grand Marais Outer Range Light, Michigan, October 2002. Went out to just capture it and got a heck of a wind storm in the works - totally unintentional!

The tall ship with the green sails in the back is "Alexander von Humbolt" - she is a converted light ship and was stationed here before the lighthouse was built.

Sorry, no "U", but a wonderful Swedish lightship for "V". It is called VÄSTRA BANKEN and located in Stockholm in Sweden. Do you know, why I love the Swedish lightships? Because they all have a real lighthouse onboard. Something very special will happen to this lightship in the next time. After some month of restoration it will be brought to Grenada in autum 2006. So if anyone of you is planning to spend a holiday on the island of Grenada in 2007, I would be grateful for a new photo smile If you would like to know more about this lightship please click here: VÄSTRA BANKEN

From the info on your site, Iris, this current version appears to be the joining of two different lightships? The hull from one and the superstructure of another? Very cool looking. It will have quite a journey to Grenada - will it be traveling under its own power?

Dave, you are right, lightship VÄSTRA BANKEN is a "mix" of two lightships. The lightship has no own engine so it will be brought "Huckepack" as we Germans say on a large carrier to Grenada.

B is for Burnham on Sea, UK

This unusual wooden light stands right on the beach a few miles south of here. This is the low light. Note the high light in the back.

You need to line them up so the red line matches up, or risk hitting a HUGE sand bank on your way into the river and to the marina

Margret,

Are all lighthouses in England and Canada white with red stripes? Is that mandated? If so, why?

Sandy, no not ALL the lights have the stripes. They are only used in situations where a day mark is required - so ships can line up on a certain course to avoid rocks or sand banks even when the light is not lit.
But we have many lights in England without the stripes.

Sandy, the Canadians use a lot of red stripes (and crosses) to help the lights stand out against a snowy landscape. Same reason the USCG switched from white hulled ice breakers to red hulls.

Sandy, those two lighthouses are the Harbour lights in the town of Warnemünde on the German Baltic coast ... I am very much hoping to get "W" this time round ... then I'll show you the main light ... wink
(Hope Iris does not mind me answering the question)

Lighthouses from A to Z ... and the list at the beginning shows the lights that were already shown. It helps to see that ever so often to save repeats. smile

Has anyone got "I" or "J" or shall I go straight to "K"? wink

That's a beautiful shot of Montara, Joe.

Sandy, thanks for asking the question and, Margret, thanks for the information about Iris' picture.

O is for Old Friedrichsort on the Kiel Fjord, Baltic Sea, Germany

This is all that is left of the old lighthouse. Since 2003 it stands in a car park in town.

This old post card shows how the light used to look when it still marked the narrowest point on the Kiel Fjord.

Sunshine,

Think your photo qualifies as a "P" entry, not as a "U".

I think "Uruguay" is a great way of getting past "U" .... not a letter easy to sattisfy!
wink
Anyone got a "V"? Or may I post a "W"?

Since there does not seem to be a V, I'll make good my promise ...

W is for Warnemünde, the port for the City of Rostock on the German Baltic Sea

On your way into the harbour you first pass the two outer harbour lights:

Then you pass the two inner harbour lights:

And last but by no means least, there is the main Warnemünde Lighthouse.

When I took the picture, Rostock was hosting the German national Garden Show and so the lighthouse was decked in advertising.

Tickles me to see how different lighthouses can be and still serve the same purpose.
