Well, Terry, Bill and I hit a few more lights yesterday... White River, both Muskegon lights, and Grand Haven. To say that we had a spectacular sunset as a treat would be an understatement. As the title of this thread mentions, and this was just one of the digital shots of last night's sunset. To say the least, I'm looking forward to seeing my slides when I get done with something that I have to run in to work tonight to do!

I'm just going to assume you are somehow related to God, Gary. Anytime you get near those lighthouse, God just turns on the sky for you and tells you where to stand.

Have to agree with John...YOU and God make the best team for great photos I know! Keep catching His handiwork on film, of anykind. Thanks for always being so generous to share what you have captured with all of us....Sue has the 1st copy, I'll take # 2. You know those low numbers in a collection mean a lot!

OK, I'll confess... I've started to very seriously consider a coffeetable book of my lighthouse photography. It hasn't gotten past that point but I'm thinking about it. I need to put together some ideas for what text will need to be generated and then some thought as to what will be included photographically. I've been toying with a title of something like "Shoreline Sentinals Sunrise to Sunset" or something like that. Comments, thoughts, suggestions, criticism or whatever regarding that as a possible title are more than welcome!!!

As for the slides from Grand Haven the other night... WOW!!! They make the digital version look pretty anemic IMO. laugh laugh laugh

We photographed at Holland at dawn this morning (no sign of Jeff or Mary there this morning! - can't understand confused ) from the much less often photographed south side of the channel. It was a hike with my 65# photo backpack and a 12# tripod but worth it! Posts from that excursion and the 3 rolls of slides that I shot this morning are coming, I promise.

Tonight we're off to photograph Michigan City at sunset. So, John & Karen, or Mark, if you're bored and don't know what to do with yourself after din-din...

Okay, the first 4 are spoken for - I want the fifth book! I love the tile - no explaination needed. I'm sure that you wouldn't have to have much text to the book. Just mention on the cover & back that it was a photography book. On the bottom of each page just type which lighthouse, location (city, State), date, and time of day (dawn, noon, dusk, etc.) That should do it. I'd buy one - it would be a beautiful addition to my growing lighthouse book collection! smile

How about a 'portfolio' book of photographs see Ansel's early publishing.

As for names maybe it should be "Shoreline Sentinels: Sunset to Sunrise."

LOL -- let's back up there now... Here's my take as to who should get which number copy of Gary's 1st lighthouse photography book: the 1st one has to go to Gary -- as otherwise I don't think he'll get one!! The 2nd one should go to his sweetheart of a wife of 20 plus years, Linda. The 3rd one to his oldest son, Josh, a Computer Science major, who helped Gary build his initial website, www.coastalbeacons.com, and did a beautiful job with it. (Gary's made the changes himself since then.) The 4th one should go to Gary's other son, Casey. Since Gary's mother is still living, I would say the 5th one should go to her. As for the 6th one, seeing as I'm the one who to my knowledge, is the 1st one to suggest he should do a book on lighthouse photography next (instead of all the scientific books, articles and papers he's written through many years), I really think the 6th one should go to me, and I do expect to pay for it!!

BTW, Gary, of course as good as the digital looks, the film version of this which you graciously donated to raise money for running this website for 2003, is much better than the digital. Maybe I'll get mine next week, seeing as I haven't so far. That will definitely join the Terry Forrest/Gary Martin gallery at work!!

John, I agree with you on the order... everyone else shoots "sunrise to sunset" and that certainlyh isn't what most of my photography is about.

As for the coffeetable book, looks like Terry has gotten the order rewritten. Funny, she makes a good point. Authors often don't end up with or have a hard time holding onto a copy of books that they write. I have written one highly successful graduate/post graduate chemistry book on, fasten your seatbelts and hang on, Two-Dimensional Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectoscopy. I had 20 copies given to me by the publisher... they all disappeared to colleagues, family, and friends. I've probably bought another 10 or more copies of it over the years and of them, I think I have one left. So, I will be keeping the first 10 or so copies myself gang and beyond that the line can form up.

Gary
