When will it be in the mail? Sounds like an interesting issue.

It is a real honor to have my photo of Yerba Buena on the cover.....Taking that particular photo was a 6 month plan..just to get to see the light.

Derith, was there a picture on the cover? (tic) I didn't notice? (lol)
That's a great accomplishment to have a Cover Photo! So tell us the story?

Hey Bob,
Here goes..I'll try not to elaborate!

When a trip to San Fransisco was planned several years ago, I began to study information about the lighthouses in that area. It didn't take long for me to realize that Yerba Buena had not been photographed many times. I love a challenge! Ask anyone who knows me. Well, I began calling the Coast Guard. It took several months to get in touch with the right person. (I didn't know Sean Thompson then) But, eventually I on emailing and talking terms with this gent. We set a time for me to come and all was right in my world.

The trip began in Seattle, and my friend and I made our way South photographing all the lights along the WA and OR and Northern CA coast. We spent the night before we were to go into SF about 30 minutes North. We knew we did not need to hurry the next morning because we had a clear shot into SF and our appointment was midday. (Start the sad music). We did not know until we were at the spot where the traffic was detoured that there had been a bad chlorine spill on HWY 5 going into SF....we could not get there! Finally, after we had missed the time set, the traffic began to use the Southbound lane of the 5.

Next morning, I went into the reception room at Yerba Buena CG headquarters and announced that I was there to see the lighthouse. "Well, we are sorry that was yesterday." My determination and "that chlorine spill was not my doing" paid off after several hours of waiting. A lovely lady who was in the Navy came and escorted us out to the Admiral's house and took us on a grand tour. When we were walking back to the car, she was approached by the admiral's aide and told she should not be there and did she have permission and on and on. She told us goodbye and dealt with the aide.

The weather was so agreeable and I knew I would probably never get there again...so I just "hung in there" or maybe there were tired of seeing my face. Now, the story could have ended like so many others with a resounding "NO"....but, I'm happy it didn't.

I agree Derith, I just love those success stories. Thankfully, there are more of those helpful people who are willing to go that extra step to share their access than the 'NO' people.

On page 7 there is a nice article on Bob Scroope and his involvement with Long Island lighthouses. However, at the bottom right of the page is a photo of a lens which is untitled. It sure looks to me like the first order lens at Umpqua River, Oregon. Am I right or is there a lens like this on Long Island?

I believe your ID of the lens is correct - uncredited photo by Patty & Mike Kaiser.
