READ CAREFULLY!

We will conclude the 2001 series with a MAJOR CHALLENGE. There will be a lot of points available for the solvers. First, solve the jigsaw puzzle below and be the FIRST CORRECT ANSWER POSTED TO THE THREAD FOR 5 POINTS.
Second, all who solve the jigsaw will be directed towards the optional challenge, which is worth a possible 20 more points TO EACH who solve it before the deadline of 12/31/2001 at midnight EST. Submit your answers for the optional challenge via email to pharologst@webworkz.com. You will get partial credit in the second part for points, in increments of 5, i.e. 5, 10, 15, or 20. (e.g. 9 correct gets 5 points) Also the first five correct with 20 of 20 will get 5,4,3,2,or 1 additional bonus point.

So it is possible to score as much as :
5 pts for 1st correct answer to part 1
20 pts for 20 of 20 correct in optional challenge
5 pts for being first with 20/20
totaling 30 points!!

Only ONE submission per person accepted for the optional challenge. Final results for 2001 posted New Years day.

Also note, there will be no NTFG on 1/3/02, the first of 2002 will be 1/10/02

Below is today's Light picture to be named.
Here’s a brief list of guidelines that will be used.
1. Every Thursday (usually after 6 pm EST) a new light will be presented, barring problems.
2. The lights may be from anywhere in the world.
3. Request that we limit guesses to 1/person/day
4. A hint may be provided every day starting on the 2nd day.
5.I will keep/post the running scores, scoring will be by points assigned for difficulty (1-5).
6. Post your guesses to this thread.
7. Your input (please!) with photos ENCOURAGED and appreciated, acknowledged when used. Please consider participating with your submissions.
8. Rate this a 5.

Current scoring as of 12/26 is:

sweetpshirin - 30
Derith - 19
SThompson - 11
Mombo - 8
Jchidester - 7
T&J Abbott - 7
Oseabee - 5
Ladybug - 4
Gebbyk - 4
Larry - 4
DMancini - 4
Chesapeake Byron – 2
Pharologst - 0

Download this week's game here: NTFG Finale

Once you have downloaded the game, just doubleclick on the exe file and start the STANDALONE VERSION. Remember, that solving the puzzle isn't by any means the end - you've got to use the completed puzzle as clues to figure which LH it is.
But of course, you can't win the game until you solve the jigsaw puzzle.
Right click on puzzle pieces to rotate them. Move them together and if you are right, they will stick together.
The 2001 overall winner gets a 2002 LE and the three runners-up get a Little Light!
Lotsa Luck and Happy Holidays !!

Major challenge? I don't think that begins to describe this weeks puzzle and extra! I've got my puzzle solving times down to an all time low but goodness, that really doesn't help me much now.

I'm getting a headache from looking at this computer screen all day so I'll start the guessing off with:

The Uto lighthouse in Finland

I have been away from the computer, but will give it the ole' try now.
Derith

How about Keflavik, Iceland?
Or could it be Stafnes, Iceland?

My guess, because of the color orange and water proximity, Keflavik. Okay, so I am wrong!

WOW, the light made it to Saturday ! This is, I believe, only the 3rd time that has happened. Remember, you may guess the light (jigsaw puzzle)posted to this thread once a day, but the optional part is a one shot submission via email. Anybody making any headway with the optional part?

Point of information: I have the light name & photo from a reliable published source, but have not been able to confirm it with any second sources, or by hours of searches. I have emailed the head of Maritime services for LH's in this country for clarification on the actual name. I also have emaile the original source for information as well. Here is the solved jigsaw puzzle picture. (note you will still have to solve this just to get the info for the optional challange)

WILL ADVISE WHEN/IF I get a clarification from the Head of LH's. I will name my original source for everyone upon completion. Many of you have this reference already. If the LH is known by another name already given in the thread, points awarded to the earliest. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I think Shirin had it, but spelled incorrectly. Then Joyce and Tom Abbott came up with the correct spelling.

On the site where I have seen it, it is called:
Small Lighthouse
Near Grindavik (Road 427)
Derith

If you look at the site below, the Lighthouse named Grindavíkur lighthouse is not a perfect fit. But, the Vatnsnes lighthouse is a better match to the picture George has posted.

Shirin seems to be right. The one called Vatnsnes looks to be the only one on that site with the cement base.

I agree with you Shirin. The Vatnsnes lighthouse appears to be an almost perfect match when viewed side by side with my photo.

I'm not sure what to do at this juncture except to wait for a possible response from Icelandic Maritime and my original source. To me they appear to be the same Light. We'll award this five points based upon some form of confirmation when it arrives, and lacking that by 12/31 we'll declare the Vatnsnes lighthouse as correct. I'll hold off on the source and original name provided until then.

Continue on warriors with the challenge!

Shirin probably has it right, but is the name you are looking for Altageroistangi Lighthouse, Iceland?

Yep, that's it!! Do you have a confirmation that the two are in fact one in the same??

(My source: Lighthouse Encyclopaedia, 2001 Edition, edited by Ken Trethewey, Lighthouse Society of Great Britain)

Assuming the Altageroistangi & Vatnsnes are the same light (which I believe) 5 points goes to Shirin. If for any reason they are not, then Tom & Joyce get the 5 points!

Having received no responses to inquiries to Icelandic Maritime and the Encyclopedia of Lighthouses, I've decided to grant 5 points to BOTH Shrin and Tom&Joyce Abbott. It would appear that the light in question has two identities, at least it appears that way. So current scoring after part one is:

sweetpshirin - 35
Derith - 19
T&J Abbott - 12
SThompson - 11
Mombo - 8
Jchidester - 7
Oseabee - 5
Ladybug - 4
Gebbyk - 4
Larry - 4
DMancini - 4
Chesapeake Byron – 2
Pharologst - 0

As of 10:30pm, 2 challange submissions have been received! Results on the morrow!
