Go back to Part I

Go back to Part II

We're now looking for an event in the year 1901 - then working backward in time for significant events in US Lighthouse History.

Remember that no two posts in a row can be about the same kind of event (new keeper, new light, etc.)

For those who haven't been participating, it's pretty easy to dig something up on the Internet. Just Google the year and the word "lighthouse". smile

Wow, you're quick! I didn't even wake up yet, and we've finished going forward and are throwing the transmission into reverse! Thanks for making the switch.

I guess I'll start it off with 1901...

1901: The St. Croix Island, ME light is built. Later, Connie Small would live here. In 1976, it was burnt down by accident in 1976.

BRANT POINT LIGHTHOUSE, Nantucket Island, MA. Shifts in the channel resulted in discontinuance of the Brant Point light in 1900 and a fixed red light was placed on a pole located about 600 yards in front of the tower.

LATIMER REEF (LATIMERS REEF) LIGHTHOUSE, Fishers Island Sound, NY. The aid's 1899 4th-order Fresnel lens was removed in 1983. That lens has been reported to have been reinstalled in Delaware Bay's Elbow of Cross Ledge Lighthouse. Today its modern optic is powered by an improved version of the successful solar system first used in the Florida Keys. Owned by the U.S. Coast Guard, it is not listed in the National Register of Historic Places. List #20085.

Tilman F. Smith lighted the Cape Hatteras Beacon light for the last time in 1898.

This was also the year in which the last lighthousekeeper in Stan's family - his father - was born!

1897 - Old Presque Isle, Michigan light sold to private party.

This lighthouse was replaced by a new Presque Isle Lighthouse, a mile away, in 1871. It was bought by a private owner in 1897 for $75. At that time not much of the tower was left, and only the foundation of the keeper's house remained. The owners rebuilt the house and tower. The station was sold to the local township in 1995. Even though the light is inactive, there are stories that many people have seen a light glowing at night in the empty lantern room.

PEMAQUID POINT LIGHTHOUSE, ME. A small red brick building was originally constructed in 1897 to house an automatic bell-striking machine that was powered by weights housed in the tall obelisk-type tower adjacent to the brick building. The rewinding of the weights to the top of the tower allowed the bell to sound at a set interval for as long as 8 hours. The bell was removed in 1934. The tower was badly damaged by a storm in April of 1991 and destroyed during Hurricane Bob in October in 1992. The tower's reconstruction was completed in 1992. Southeast of the keeper's house and nestled in a small grove of trees is the station's 1896 brick oil house.

1895 - Marblehead, Mass. The present tower was built.

Ezekiel Darling, Marblehead Light's first keeper, had been a gunner on the U.S.S. Constitution. His successor, Jane C. Martin, was for a time the only female lighthouse keeper on the east coast. As large cottages were built on Marblehead Neck, the 1835 lighthouse proved to be too short, so a much taller one was built in 1895. Marblehead Light is the only iron skeletal style lighthouse in New England. The tower is now cared for by the Town of Marblehead under a license agreement with the Coast Guard.

MINOT’S LEDGE (MINOT LEDGE) LIGHTHOUSE, MA. A new optic was installed in May of 1894 with a group flashing 1 + 4 + 3 characteristic. With a local “I Love You” interpretation, the beacon has become known as the “Lover’s Light” or the “I-Love-You Lighthouse.” Minot’s Ledge was automated in 1947 and its Fresnel lens removed. The lens’ replacement was converted to solar power in 1983.

1893 - LOON ISLAND LIGHT is built on Lake Sunapee, NH

For well over a hundred years Lake Sunapee has drawn summer vacationers. Steamboat travel was frequent on the 10-mile long, three-mile wide lake in the late 19th century, and in 1891 the steamer Edmond Burke struck an underwater ledge. This led to the construction of a lighthouse for $400 on Loon Island in 1893. Today the lighthouse is owned by the New Hampshire Marine Patrol Bureau but the structure is maintained by the Lake Sunapee Protective Association.

NAUSET LIGHTHOUSE, MA was established when one of the two Chatham cast-iron towers was moved to Eastham in 1923. The keeper's house, a 1½-story wood frame Victorian house, was built in 1875. The tower (1877), brick oil house (1892), and the dwelling (1875) are now the property of the National Park Service. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

PROSPECT HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE, ME. Completed in 1850, the first lighthouse was a granite stone tower attached to one end of a stone keeper’s dwelling. Although these structures were renovated in 1871, they continued to deteriorate until they were dismantled and replaced in 1891 by the present tower and the 1½-story wood framed house.

BEAR ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE, ME. The first lighthouse was constructed in 1839. A new brick tower was built off one end of the original keeper’s residence in 1852-‘53. The light station was totally rebuilt in 1889. The present light station consists of the 33'-tall lighthouse with an attached workroom, the detached 1½-story, gambrel-roofed house, barn (1889), a stone oil house (1905), and a boathouse.

1883- CONIMICUT, RI - Present tower was built

The first Conimicut Lighthouse, a granite tower, replaced Nayatt Point Light in 1868. The dwelling was detroyed by ice in 1875, and the granite lighthouse was replaced by the present one in 1883. Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, ownership of this lighthouse was transferred to the City of Warwick in September 2004. The active light is still maintained by the Coast Guard.

1881 - Ipswich Rear Range Light replaced by a new tower.

Two range lighthouses were built in 1837-38 at Castle Neck in Ipswich, on the beach now known as Crane Beach, to mark the entrance to Ipswich Harbor. The towers had to be moved nine times in the next four decades as the channel shifted. In 1877 it was reported that the rear tower was badly cracked. In 1881 it was replaced by a white cast iron tower. Also at some point the front range light was replaced by a shanty-like affair. In 1932 the front range light was discontinued and the rear tower was automated. In 1939 the iron lighthouse was moved to Edgartown in Martha's Vineyard to replace an earlier structure that had been badly damaged in the Hurricane of '38. Ipswich Light was replaced by a skeleton tower. After some years of use by town organization and residents, the keeper's house was destroyed by fire.

1877 - Second Chatham tower falls victim to erosion

The 1808 Chatham Twins Light station was the second light station (after Highland Light) established on Cape Cod. The eroding bluff claimed the 1841 twin towers in 1877. The present lighthouse's twin was moved to Eastham in 1923; it is the present Nauset Light. The lantern of Chatham Light was removed by the Coast Guard in 1969 and was replaced by a larger lantern to make room for a rotating aerobeacon.

Point Fermin Lighthouse, CA
Built in 1874 with lumber from California redwoods and a Fresnel Lens brought around Cape Horn by sailing ships. For its time, this Victorian lighthouse was a palatial structure, crowned with a cupola fitted with a 2,100-candlepower light. Miss Mary L. Smith, the first, lighthouse keeper, lived with her sister, but they gave up the lonely occupation because there were no other settlers nearer than Wilmington.

I am astonished how many women were lighthouse keepers in the US this far back in history!

1871 - Bridgeport, Ct lighthouse was built.

The second Bridgeport Harbor Light was built in 1871. It was an octagonal wooden tower on a wooden keeper's house on iron screw piles. The Coast Guard replaced the lighthouse with a skeleton tower in 1953. A crew was removing the lighthouse when it accidentally caught fire and was destroyed.

PROSPECT HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE, ME. The light and fog signal were first established to mark the inner harbor’s east side entrance for the town’s large fishing fleet. Although the Lighthouse Board deactivated the aids in 1859 because the harbor was no longer being used as an anchorage during storms, the station was reopened in 1870.

The 1870 5th-order Fresnel lens was automated in 1934 and replaced with a modern lens in 1951.

[b]1868 - Nayatt Point Light, RI was discontinued./b]

When Conimicut Light was built in 1868, Nayatt Point Light's Fresnel lens was transferred to the new lighthouse and the old light was discontinued. The 1828 keeper's house, although much changed, is Rhode Island's oldest lighthouse keeper's house. The property has been on the market since 1997 for an asking price of $1.275 million.

In 1858 the Lighthouse Board began work on a new 150 foot brick tower, three times the height of the 1828 lighthouse. Work was interrupted by the outbreak of the Civil War, and the lighthouse was not completed until May 1864

I know this is not a lighthouse in the USA, but the US played a big role here so I thought it might be allowed wink

Very interesting event, Margret. I missed your comment back on 11/12, John. I had attempted the non-USA and got bogged down reading all the information, so I quit.

Umm, a bit confusing Margret. Your last three posts are 1865, 1864, 1865 in that order. Are we on 1863? If so, then I'll post this:

LAZARETTO POINT LIGHT REPLICA, Baltimore, MD. The decision to build where the original was located (still marked on city maps, directly across the mouth of Baltimore Harbor from Fort McHenry, at Lazaretto Point) was made because the government already owned five acres of land that they had used for a smallpox hospital. The hospital no longer operated there. In 1836 a fire destroyed the old hospital and damaged the keeper’s house. A new keeper’s house was built that year using salvaged bricks from the old keeper’s quarters and the hospital. This new house was 20' x 35' and 2 stories tall. In the late 1850s the original 11 lamps and reflectors of the light were replaced with a 4th-order Fresnel lens with a fixed white light.
In 1863 the Lighthouse Board took over the entire site of the old hospital to use for a storage depot for buoys but, because of the war, the area was used as an ordinance depot for the next 3 years.

Cape Ann Lights aka Thacher Island Twin Lights

From August, 1860 to October, 1861, two new 124-feet high granite Towers were erected 298 yards apart and exhibited Fixed White Lights 165-feet above sea level. Both Lighthouses were First Lit on October 1, 1861 illuminated by First-order Fresnel lenses and oil-wick lamps. Cape Ann Twin Lights were the last two Lighthouses to be fitted with a Fresnel lens.

1860 - Thelights went out on Scituate LIght for the second time

The most famous story in the history of Scituate Light is the "Scituate Army of Two." During the War of 1812 a British warship landed near the lighthouse. The two teenage daughters of the keeper were at the lighthouse alone. They began playing a fife and drum; the British thought the sound was the local militia and they hastily retreated. Scituate Light was discontinued in 1850 when the first Minot's Ledge Light went into service. It went back into service from 1852-1860. In 1994, the lighthouse was relighted by the Scituate Historical Society as a private aid to navigation.

PROSPECT HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE, ME. The light and fog signal were first established to mark the inner harbor’s east side entrance for the town’s large fishing fleet. Although the Lighthouse Board deactivated the aids in 1859 because the harbor was no being used as an anchorage during storms, the station was reopened in 1870.

FENWICK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE. In 1852, responding to great public pressure to improve the lighthouse service, Congress established a nine member Lighthouse Board. The Board was responsible for putting the Fenwick Island Lighthouse in service in 1858 with the latest in lighthouse technology to warn ships of the dangerous Fenwick shoals. The Lighthouse Bureau replaced the Board in 1910 and ran the service until 1931 when it was turned over to the US Coast Guard.

1857 - Ida Lewis takes over as keeper from her father who had a stroke

The first keeper of the Lime Rock Lighthouse, Hosea Lewis, had a stroke in 1857. His daughter, Ida, soon took over the lighthouse duties. Ida Lewis remained keeper until 1911. She was credited with many rescues and is one of the most celebrated lighthouse keepers in American history. In 1924 the official name of Lime Rock Light was changed to Ida Lewis Rock Light. The light was discontinued in 1927, and the building subsequently became the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. The light is now operated as a private aid to navigation in summer as a tribute to Ida Lewis.

1856 - Matinicus LIght, Maine - 17 year old Abbie Burgess takes over duties for her father who was unable to return to the light because of a storm.

The most famous story of Matinicus Rock concerns Abbie Burgess, daughter of Keeper Samuel Burgess. When she was 17 years old in 1856 Abbie's father was away and couldn't return due to a storm. Abbie kept the two lights burning for about a month before her father could return. She cared for her invalid mother and younger sisters at the same time. Abbie later married assistant keeper Isaac Grant; they had four children at Matinicus Rock before moving to Whitehead Light. Abbie's grave in Spruce Head is marked by a miniature lighthouse, placed there in the 1940s by historian Edward Rowe Snow and restored by the American Lighthouse Foundation in 1995. The Coast Guard left Matinicus Rock in 1983. In 1997 the lighthouse went to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Maine Lights Program. The island is maintained as a bird sanctuary.

POND ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE, ME (Kennebec River). The first of the Kennebec River beacons mariners pass bound for Bath, ME. The first tower, a white conical shape, was built in 1821. In 1855 the lighthouse was completely rebuilt as a cylindrical brick tower in the Federal Design architectural style. The 20' tall lighthouse’s original optic was a whale oil-fed lamp and a 5th-order Fresnel lens.

In June 2004 the headline "Beacon beckons on Alcatraz Public invited to top for 1st time since 1854" appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle.
It was the 150th anniversary of the light station on Alcatraz, which has served as a sentinel to mariners since it was first lit on the night of June 1, 1854. Alcatraz was the first lighthouse on an otherwise dark Pacific Coast.

1853 - Cedar Point Lighthouse began to serve as a Rear Range Light

From 1853 to 1904, this lighthouse served as a rear range light; a front range beacon was added about 265 feet north of the lighthouse. The front light was destroyed by fire in 1910. The tower was removed from this lighthouse and the building was used by the Lighthouse Service and Coast Guard until 1975. It was acquired by the Cedar Point Amusement Park around 1990. The building was renovated and the tower was rebuilt in 2000-2001.

In 1852 Congress created a nine-member Lighthouse Board and with it a new era in American lighthouse construction began.

NEWPORT HARBOR (GOAT ISLAND) LIGHTHOUSE, RI was originally located on the south end of Goat Island. Construction of this 20'-tall stone tower fitted with a multi-lamp/reflector optic showing a fixed white light was completed in late 1823 and its light established on January 1, 1824. The location confused mariners and many vessels ended up on the rocks at the northern tip of the island. In 1837 it was decided to move the aid to the north end. The breakwater and new light station were completed in 1838. The original 1823 tower was moved to Prudence Island in 1851.

1850 - Bullock's Point, RI - Daymark established.

Around 1850 a daymark was erected at Bullock's Point in the Providence River to mark dangerous shoals. In 1872 a portable beacon was installed on a granite pier; a lighthouse was built in 1876. The Hurricane of 1938 undermined the pier beneath the lighthouse and did great damage to the building itself. Bullock's Point Light was discontinued shortly after the great storm and the structure was torn down a few years later.

ROCK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE, St. Lawrence Seaway Trail, St. Lawrence River, Fisher’s Landing, NY. The first Rock Island Lighthouse was built in 1847 to mark one of the many hazards facing vessels sailing up and down the St. Lawrence River. In 1882, the current 40' tower, equipped with a 6th-order Fresnel lens, replaced the old structure. The original tower was built in the center of the island and could be difficult to see. The loss of two ships on a nearby shoal spurred the construction of the new tower. The lantern room of the original tower was used on the new tower.

Rock Island is one of a small number of lighthouses which retains all of its original structures. The smokehouse was built in 1847; the keeper’s house dates to 1882; the generator house was built in 1900; the boathouse in 1920.
