The rules:

We're working with the years of important events in individual lighthouses' histories. One person will list a year, a lighthouse, and an event that took place in that year at that light. The next person has to find another light with a DIFFERENT event that happened the next year.

Once we run out of events going forward in time, we'll go back to my original event and go backwards. And so on and so forth, bouncing between 1716 and 2004/5.

The twists and rules:

-Why is "different" in caps? When you post an event, it cannot be the same thing as happened in the previous event. Example: My event is a lighthouse getting a new lens. The next person cannot make their event have to do with getting a lens in a light. This might get a bit confusing...go with your gut feeling.

-Your event MUST be in the next year in the direction of play. If the previous post was 1876, you must post an 1875 (for backwards in time) or 1877 (for forwards in time).

-All lights must be in the US.

-You must provide a link to a webpage with the fact you are presenting on it.

-One post per person per day.


We left off with 1934, so the next post should be for a 1935 event.

1935- The Federal Government abandoned Cape Hatteras lighthouse from 1935 to 1950

1936 - Holland Harbor ("Big Red") current light tower was added to the top of one of the gables, and the entire building was covered with steel plates.

Well, in 1940, the head keeper at Michigan City died and the assistant keeper moved out of the old, original lighthouse building. (Now the Old Michigan City Lighthouse, our Hoosier club's adopted light). The building became a private residence for a while, and was also used by the CG Auxillary for a while before being left to the vandalls until 1965 when the Historical Society took possession and began restoration. 1953 Elbow of Cross Ledge

In October 1953, the light was struck by the ore freighter Steel Apprentice making it's way through dense fog and as a result 2/3's of the structure was destroyed, leaving only the caisson base and about 10-feet of the tower.

1954 Saugerties Lighthouse decomissioned

1955 - The lightship Hankerchief (LV98 / WAL521) is decommissioned at an age of 40. It's last duty location was at Relief (MA).

Mendota Light Station , Bete Gis, Michigan, that was built in 1895 was decommissioned in 1960. It is privately owned at present and used as a residence.

This light served until 1962 when the new Charleston Lighthouse on Sullivan's Island was put into service.

1963 - Eagle Buff Lighthouse in Door County, WI opens to the public.

Mombo posted another URL from the same site, same type of page. I took the URL to the Play Room, and got the same result. I'm stumped on this one. Other URLs work fine.

You can't use figures that are not basic text, ones that are considered special operators if I remember correctly. The % sign is a special operator.

Just a reminder...as we are getting closer to modern times, many events are going to be for automation, deactivation, and other similar events. Just remember that there cannot be two of the same type of event in a row.

1967 - A lighthouse is built on Santa Cruz, California Point by parents to serve as a memorial to their son who drowned in a surfing accident.

The Titanic Memorial Lighthouse in New York City was donated to the Souith Street SeaportMuseum in 1968 and eight years later, in 1976, it was erected at it's curent location on the corner of South & Fulton Streets.

There were once 3 wonderful keeper's dwellings, a fog signal building and other structures, but all that remains today are the lighthouse and oil house. The rest were burned down in 1970 to prevent their use by squatters.

1971-The Maurice River Historical Society is founded with the goal of restoring the East Point Light. That same year, before negiotations with the state were complete, the lighthouse was set on fire. The lantern room, roof and most of the buildings interior were destroyed.
