Among all Canadian lighthouses, the "flying buttress" towers are perhaps the most striking. There were originally nine of these towers, all built from a set of plans drawn by William P. Anderson, Chief Engineer and Superintendent of lighthouses for the Department of Marine and Fisheries, and all built in a few years around 1910. Six of the nine survive.

You are correct and it's your turn Eric.

I had to ask the question because the Flying Buttress Lighthouses are so neat looking, they remind me of a Flash Gordon Rocket Ship..

Different buttresses, also..

Sabine Pass's buttresses are at the base of the tower while the Canadian buttresses go from the ground to the lanternroom.

I cannot name it, but it reminds me of one we saw in Ireland. It reminded me of Roches Point, but it isn't.

Inasmuch as a number of the forum members have been lighthousing in the UK countries, maybe they can tell us the names of the three agencies, similar to our Coast Guard, that maintain the lights in the UK countries and if you can tell us which agency is responsible for which countries, you should treat yourself to a Krispy Kreme!! If those that have been to the UK can't answer this one, maybe someone else can.

England and Wales is Trinity House

Scotland and the Isle of Man is the Northern Lighthouse Board

Ireland including Northern Ireland is the Commissioners of Irish Lighthouses

When I was on the cruise out of Barcelona back in January, I had hopes of seeing the lighthouse when going thru the Straits of Gibraltar, but alas and alack, it was dark. The story of my life...cruise out of NYC to New England and the Maritime Provinces was a lot in the dark. We thought we saw the light on western Newfoundland. We saw blinking lights.

Yes, the Commander and family, if any, reside in the keeper's house at the Hospital Point Light Station, Beverly, MA.

The following flickr link has additional information on how the light station got its name, the rank of the Commander, the States of responsibility, etc.

Bakers Island Twin Lights also known as Ma and Pa.

Due to their difference in height, the Twin Towers were nicknamed “Mr. and Mrs. Lighthouses.

Laura, That's my understanding.

Art, While the Thimble Shoal area had different lightships only one was on station and removed upon completion of the Thimble Shoal Light Station.

No answer on the east coast.

Laura, you got me thinking, so I did some additional research. I found that while the lightships served in the same area for many years, they were more than likely not all retired at the same time. Sorry for the confusion.

Art, you really worked hard on this one.... and you got it right, its Grays Reef. Incidentally, the 1994 Inventory of Historic Light Stations does not include LV 103 as one of the replaced lightships, only the other 3 you list. Possibly it was replaced earlier or later?

Your turn.

MG - Back to the Grays Reef question. According to this site: http://www.uscglightshipsailors.org/grays_reef_lightship_station_history.htm
the following lightships served at Grays Reef, with years served.
LV-77 1891-1923
LV-103 1924-1926
LV-56 1927-1928
LV-99 1929-1935
The lighthouse was built in 1936.

Laura, First I presume your LV 77 is simply a typo, and you meant LV 57.

Second, below is a link to Terry Pepper's page with interesting information on Grays Reef and the lightships.

http://www.terrypepper.com/lights/michigan/grays_reef/grays_reef.htm

And last is a link to a West Michigan Tourist Association page on Grays Reef which mentions that the light replaced a series of lightships, namely, LV's 57, 56 and 99. I suspect they got this information from the 1994 Inventory of Historic Light Stations where I originally read the information several years ago.

http://www.wmta.org/grays-reef-light-station-83/

I believe LV 103 was not mentioned in this case as the others were not only replaced they were removed from service at various dates mentioned in the link you provided, whereas LV 103, built in 1920, was kept in service and eventually became the Huron which at 89 years of age still exists as a museum at Port Huron, MI.

MA. is correct as Maine was not yet a state and was part of MA. when Portland Head Light was completed in January 1791.

Art, why don't you put one up while we await HCS?

According to Lighthouse Directory Jeffrey's Hook was reactivated in 2002.
Quote:
The New York Historic House Trust held a ceremony to relight the lighthouse on September 19, 2002.
According to Hudson River Lights it is inactive.

You beat me by a couple minutes Loon. towel I was stuck trying to figure out if this one was active or not.

What lighthouse, just as plans were getting underway to restore it, was hit by a violent storm in May of 2000?

This storm cause the ligthhouse to fall into the sea.

Cleft of the Rock is named after a Christian hymn named He Hideth My Soul in the Cleft of the Rock, which is based on a biblical passage.

There are 3 Statue of Liberty's that I am aware of (and actually have seen) - NY Harbor, Paris, and ????

It also has a view of a bridge and a fort.

Not on either coast. Not anywhere I've been recently. Think of a place where many Harbour Lights Wackos spent a few days, a few years ago.
