On Bob's comments about replica Statue of Liberty's, in the 1950's, the boy scouts were involved in erecting over 200 all over the country, including the one on Mackinac Island. Below is a link showing images of over 100 that still exist.

http://troop101.thescouts.com/liberty/

Additionally, many others were built around the world including 2 in France and even one in Hanoi that was destroyed in 1945. Next link has more information on others.

http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Replicas_of_the_Statue_of_Liberty

Next trivia, name at least 5 light stations now operated as B & B's.

Three of the ones listed by Paul are for rental only, no breakfast, unless there have been recent changes. The rentals only are Rose Island, Saugerties and Race Point.

Also, Isle au Haut was a B&B, but no longer as the keepers house was closed in 2008 and only a Woodshed Cottage is available for weekly rentals, but no breakfast provided. In addition the property was put up for sale in 2007, current asking price $2,200,000. Can we put a group together? LOL

http://www.keepershouse.com/

Last but not least, there are several books on lighthouse B&B's. If you don't want to buy a book, there is a website for lighthouses with overnight accomodations including B&B's for the U.S. as well as other countries. Note that many of the listings are for properties that are not real lighthouses. See below.

http://lighthouse.cc/links/overnight.html

I'm finished, Paul's turn.

There is a story, or legend that a skeleton was found, sitting at a table, in a hidden basement under this lighthouse, about 1850. Sometimes its under the lighthouse, sometimes under the keepers house. Supposedly in the 1950's 4 men and one women were found buried at the base of this same lighthouse. Which light?

Cape Flattery is my last west coast Cape Cod to see. Were you able to get onto the island?

Next question: While 'pepperpot' lighthouses are more common in Canada, there have been several US lighthouses referred to as pepperpots. Name one.

No, on getting on the island, but the walk back to the vista is both really cool and at times a little an effort but not to bad.. It is up hill all the way back to where you park. You need to stop at the Makah tribe's Museum both to get a pass to be on the reservation and it is a very nice little Museum.

The lighthouse is being turned over to the Makah tribe, they already owned the island.

Lighthouse decommissioned....

You're absolutely correct MG, no "s".

These range lights located in Ohio have a decidedly New York name.

MG, MY reseach states four; the Winstantson light 1698, Rudyard light 1709, Smeaton light 1759 and Douglas light 1882. It is point out the first light had major reconstructuion of it's upper tower, therefore cosidered as a seperate light so it could be regarded as fifth light. you have next question

Art, you apparently missed my answer of 4 on 10/6. I based my answer on a book I have titled "The Four Eddystone Lighthouses". Since you didn't respond to it, I thought maybe 4 was incorrect and did some research. I found the following link which has excerpts from another book which refers to the five lights including the reconstructed one.

http://www.cornwall-calling.co.uk/lighthouses/Eddystone.htm

Last but not least, the four lights builders were Winstanley, not Winstantson, Rudyerd, Smeaton and Douglass.

I'll post a question later today.

Name the east coast light that has a fine brass-framed slot imbedded in the landing near the lantern deck through which pass the weighted chains of the tower’s 1,000-pound fog bell striking mechanism. This unusual feature is one of two unique Lighthouse Services items found within this structure.

Looks like this one's proving to be difficult--here's another clue:

The other item is an unusual air vent. To operate it one must grab hold of a leather strap and then pull a cylindrical copper fitting out of its housing. The partially withdrawn copper can has large round perforations that allowed air to flow into the lantern.

The keeper’s house from another station was floated to this station in 1930.

Point Hueneme, CA (had to look up the spelling)

Similar to Point Fermin and Hereford Inlet. Now a concrete Art Deco building.

Not only was Point Hueneme (pronounced "Wy-Nee-Mee")similar to Point Fermin, they were both lit on December 15, 1874, but the original Hueneme Light was replaced by the concrete art deco lighthouse in 1941 and is still an active Aid to Navigation(ATN).

Below is a link with some Point Hueneme history as well as photos of the new lighthouse.

I had to laugh at your explanation of the pronunciation. My sister and I didn't figure out how to say it until a couple weeks after we were there.

Next question: What offshore lighthouses might you be able to see, weather permitting, from the lantern room at Sandy Hook?

That would be:
Romer Shoal - NJ
Old Orchard Shoal - NY
West Bank - NY

I've taken the ferry from the Atlantic Highlands, which is near Sandy Hook, to Shea Stadium. The ferry passes these three lighthouses.
