I've been away for a few days and in reading the recent trivia items, I find one is incorrect. With respect to Paul's item "What Light Station is the only US Station to have an official Coast Guard Keeper..", the answer is NONE as of September 2003. At that time, Sally Snowman was appointed as the first civilian keeper of Boston Light since the Coast Guard took over in 1941. She was also its first female keeper in its history. All active Coast Guard personnel, except for a CG engineer, were relocated to meet the needs of Homeland Security. See link for more information.

http://lighthouse.cc/boston/history2.html

I will post a new trivia item later today.

She is appointed by the Coast Guard and the Boston Light is the only Station in the US that still has an official Coast Guard keeper.. Congress directed the Coast Guard to assign keepers at Boston Light in order to perserve the tradition of light keeping at one station. She doesn't have to be a member of the Coast Guard to be an official Coast Guard (appointed) keeper.

A number of famous artists lived in lighthouses at various times. Which famous American artist lived in a lighthouse in 1880 and which lighthouse is it?

Cedar Island Lighthouse is it. In September 1938 a hurricane created a sandbar connecting Cedar Island on Long Island NY to the shore and it has been Cedar Point ever since so Paul is correct and thus it's his turn.

The LV-50, during a storm in 1899, the chain holding it in place broke. The crew quickly set the sails and kept the vessel from grounding. After several attempts to tow the ship to safety failed the next day, the ship was intentionally grounded near Cape Disappointment. Eighteen months later, after the ship was successfully hauled 700 yards overland, LV-50 was then launched into Baker Bay in the Columbia River. In 1901 it was repaired in Portland then returned to service.

And here's the rest of the story....

The Columbia River Lightship, LV-50, was constructed in 1892 and had sails, but no engine for propulsion, so when the anchor chain broke in a gale on November 28, 1899, the crew had a difficult time handling the ship with only sail power and thus had to eventually beach the lightship. The Lighthouse Service tried to refloat the lightship for 16 months without success. A plan was eventually devised where a house moving company, yes a house moving company would build a marine railway, the lightship would be jacked into a cradle and then moved on the marine railway 700 yards overland as noted by Paul. I would guess this was the only lightship or any ship of similar size that was ever moved by house movers.

For more information, click on the link below for an article written in 2004 by Jim Claflin for the Lighthouse Digest. There are also 3 interesting photos showing 3 stages of the move. A unique and interesting story in the history of lightships.

Another good job Paul, your turn.

What lighthouse tower was rumored to originally have been painted with the diamond pattern that Cape Lookout was painted with, it was an unfounded rumor as it turns out.

In 1824 the first lighthouse was built on this island, it was replaced in 1850. A fog station was established on a nearby island in 1855. For a time, the lighthouse keeper on one island could push a button that would ring a gong and wake up the fog signal keeper, on the other island, so he could start the fog signal. What lighthouse?

“it is inconceivable for a lighthouse to be constructed on this mass of volcanic rock - perpendicular on every face, with an ascent inaccessible by any natural means."
James Whistler, who later became famous for his painting of his mother, was part of the survey team.

OK I guess we need a second clue?

The lighthouse was built offsite in three sections in 90 days, and assembled on the foundation in less than a day.

Name the light that had this lens:

A 4th-order Fresnel lens that had a clockworks that rotated an eclipser that flashed the light on for 1 second and off for 1 second. The occultations were achieved by covering alternate panels with spherical mirrors that intensified the light in the opposite panel.

No not St. Augustine.. It's one of the surviving Early Federal Octagonal Lighthouses..

You are correct, Eric, it's your turn.. Most don't think of Old Baldy being brick because of the stucco over the bricks and all of the patches..

Even being there you can only see that it is built of brick in a few small places where the plaster has broken away on the inside walls.

Well POOO, what did I do wrong this time? It's been awhile since I posted pictures.

Sorry for the delay.

Nice photo Stephanie, some of the bricks in the current tower are actually from the previous tower activated in 1794.

Well lets get to the issue at hand. Next question.

Watching Dirty Jobs the other day they showed a lighthouse that is located on the same road that the site of the "Dirty Job" which was cranberry farming was filmed. The cranberry farm has the same name as the lighthouse. So the question for you is which lighthouse was it?
