The ship carrying iron work for this tower sank, but a good portion of the cargo was off-loaded before the ship settled to the bottom. A substantial amount, however, including the lantern, went down with the ship. The district engineer came up with a creative plan to salvage the lost cargo--he hired a couple of tenders and an experienced diver, who was able to recover almost all of the missing parts. Only a couple of small brackets had to be duplicated and, amazingly, work proceeded on schedule. Name the East Coast light.

Well since no one else has guessed I can think of a ship that sank here in Florida that was actually carrying 2 complete lighthouses and almost all the piece were recovered for both lighthouses except for a few small pieces. The lighthouses in question are Sanibel Island (where the ship sank) and Cape San Blas.

Sorry about the delay in responding--the mystery lighthouse thread was the new topic when I last looked and there was no responses here, so I thought this topic had been finished.

The information I have didn't include Cape San Blas as one of the two that sank with the ship. The correct answer is Sanibel and Eric got it, so it's his turn.

The Coast Guard has a 1945 photo and a 1964 aerial photo of the lighthouse. The original site, about 1 mile (1.5 km) southwest of the Brazos River entrance, is owned by Dow Chemical and is closed to the public. Site and museum open daily except Sundays. ARLHS USA-079'

Bob, I have this thing for the Sanibel class towers. Must be from my work with Anclote Key. I have climbed 4 of them and was supposed to have climbed Sanibel, but the Coasties broke the key off in the lock.

This lighthouse, built in 1840 was described as: "tall looking box-like structure, about nine feet high and one foot wide, so was all sides; built on a suitable position facing the landing."

Eric, I considered myself lucky to get to climb my first Skeleton tower - Tinicum Rear Range. To get to climb 4 Sanibel class towers - wohoo! Yeah, I would have still been disappointed about Sanibel too.

Hawaii's very first light station other than traditional signal fires was a 9-foot-tall structure on the Lahaina waterfront erected in 1840 at the behest of King Kamehameha III. Several bigger and sturdier incarnations later the Lahaina Light now stands 55 feet tall and as of Feb. 2009 boasts solar power — the first major light in the islands to do so.

Its been almost a year, so I figure it won't hurt to go ahead. This lighthouse is mounted on a fort, but isn't Garden Key. Its also located near a bridge.

More than one. Fort Wadsworth (Verrazano-Narrows bridge) and Fort Point (Golden Gate bridge) immediately come to mind. If you are looking for a particular lighthouse, you need to define it more.

They were working on the Golden Gate bridge the day we were there, Fort Point was closed and this was as close as we could get.

This 100 foot tall lighthouse was first lit in 1887 and had a third order fresnel lens.

I found an 1887, 102 foot tower with a fourth order - Anclote Key. That's not the one you're looking for though.

Actually Anclote Keys would be it. 100, 102, and 105 are the heights I have seen listed for Anclote Keys.

Well Cape Romain COULD be called that, I know of one that is, so I'm going to guess 3

While there are goats at the Cape Romain lights, its called Raccoon Key or Lighthouse Island.

I will admit I used a thesaurus.

Chesapeake Bay lost many screwpile lighthouses to ice. Two cottage style lighthouses on the bay were planned with caisson foundations instead of the more fragile screwpiles, but to due budget constraints were built with screwpiles. Which ones?

Both of these lighthouses are gone now, but one is being rebuilt!

One of these lighthouses is in John's list of Native American names. Rosalie has a picture on the forum of the spider foundation of the other.

Now that's a tough one. No idea.

To clarify a bit:
Light station A is completely gone, but is being rebuilt. It is on John's list of Native American lighthouse names.
Light station B is gone, but the spider foundation remains and Rosalie has a picture of it here on the forum.
Both of these Chesapeake Bay cottage style lighthouses were originally designed to sit on caissons, rather than screwpiles. Due to budgets, they were built as cottage screwpiles.
