1957 Bar Light, Maryland - BOMBED!

Very interesting! We haven't had this happen before on Timeline!

In 1957, three Navy fighter/bombers were doing a routine practice night bombing raid on an old ship a few miles from the lighthouse. A pilot mistakenly dropped targeting flares on the lighthouse instead of the ship, and the three planes then proceeded to bomb the lighthouse with unarmed rockets. The structure was damaged and two keepers were injured. A modern automatic light on the old foundation replaced the lighthouse in 1960.

CONEY ISLAND (NORTON POINT) LIGHTHOUSE, Long Island, NY. This light still had a lightkeeper until his death in December of 2003. Frank Schubert had been “keeping a good light” since 1960 and was the last civilian lightkeeper for the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Even though he was “officially” retired as keeper, Frank remained as the guardian of the light in the 2-story frame keeper’s home (1896) next door. Frank also served as a keeper at the Old Orchard Lighthouse, off Staten Island.

1961 - SAKONNET POINT, RHODE ISLAND - SOLD AT AUCTION

The hurricanes of 1938 and 1954 badly damaged Sakonnet Light, and it was discontinued in 1954. Carl Haffenreffer bought the lighthouse at auction for $1,300 in 1961.

1964 - BOSTON LIGHT Designated National Historic Site.

Boston Light was America's first light station (1716) and the last to be automated (1998). It is still staffed by the Coast Guard. The first lighthouse was destroyed by the British at the close of the American Revolution in 1776; the present lighthouse was built in 1783. Boston Light was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Little Brewster Island is now part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.

1966 - Bird Island Light, MA turned over or sold

Since 1966 Bird Island has been owned by the Town of Marion. It is an important nesting site for common terns and endangered roseate terns. The Bird Island Light Preservation Society raised funds for the restoration of the lighthouse by International Chimney Corp., and it was relighted as a private aid to navigation on July 4, 1997.

1972 SHIP ISLAND LIGHT - Gulfport, Mississippi accidently destroyed by fire.

The 1886 lighthouse at this site was accidentally destroyed by fire in 1972, after being replaced by a steel skeleton tower the previous year. A replica of the 1886 tower has been constructed by the Friends of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The nearby 80-foot skeleton tower remains an active aid to navigation (it also displays the Ship Island Range Rear Light and a red range daybeacon) and the replica is also an active private aid to navigation. NOTE: THE 2000 replica lighthouse was reported lost in Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005.

FOWEY ROCKS LIGHTHOUSE, FL. In 1931 Fowey Rocks’ kerosene powered classical lens was electrified, its candlepower increased and a flashing characteristic established using a metal screen that revolved inside the lens. The light was automated in 1974 and its old Fresnel has been replaced by a high intensity optic powered by solar charged batteries. That system was installed after an unsuccessful testing of a windmill driven generator.

DRUM POINT LIGHT, Solomons, MD. Deactivated in 1962, the lighthouse was moved in one piece to the Calvert Marine Museum in 1975. Its legs were cut off at the waterline and the lighthouse was craned to the museum where it continues to serve by reminding visitors of our nation’s rich maritime history. The hexagonal keeper’s cottage has been restored with furnishings just as it might have looked at the turn of the century.

1977 - Derby Wharf Light in Massachusetts - Deactivated

This lighthouse was built at the end of Derby Wharf during the decline of the fishing trade in Salem as an aid to navigation within Salem Harbor. Because of its proximity to the town itself, this lighthouse was maintained by caretakers until its automation in 1970. The lighthouse was deactivated in 1977 and was finally relighted in 1983 by the Friends of Salem Maritime as a private aid to navigation.

1984 - GREAT POINT LIGHT on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts - Destroyed during a severe storm.

A severe storm in March 1984 destroyed the 1818 Great Point Lighthouse. A replica of the lighthouse was built 300 yards west of the previous site, paid for by over $1 million in federal funds. The new lighthouse was dedicated on September 7, 1986. It is owned by the Coast Guard and is an active aid to navigation; it is leased to the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge.

SOUTHWEST LEDGE (NEW HAVEN BREAKWATER) LIGHTHOUSE, CT The structure's architectural style is that of the French Second Empire. When constructed, the lighthouse was fitted with a 4th-order Fresnel lens. That lens was removed in 1988 when it was replaced by an automated electric modern lens. Unmanned since 1988, the structure's doors and windows have been sealed with steel, plywood, and sheet metal ventilators.

1989 - ERIE LAND LIGHT, PA- Replica Lantern installed.

The 1818 20-foot stone tower here (originally known as Presque Isle Light) was about 200 yards west of the current lighthouse. The present lighthouse became the property of the City of Erie in 1934, and it is now part of the city's Land Lighthouse Park. For a long time it had no lantern; a replica lantern was installed in 1989. The replica lantern was destroyed in a storm in May 2003, but a new lantern should be installed by October 2003.

Margret - I'd say that counts. I draw a personal line between real lighthouses, good faux lights, and bad faux lights (barely a lighthouse, no siginficance). The latter, I'd say, can't be used at all in this game, but the middle one could be, depending on its historical or regional significance, actual lighthouse use, etc.

1992: Rose Island Lighthouse (RI) is opened to the public.

Almost done! Just 13 more years! We're finally up to events I've actually been alive for! laugh

1993 - Block Island Southeast moved 300 feet back from the edge.

In 1990 the Coast Guard deactivated Block Island Southeast Light and replaced it with a skeleton tower. The lighthouse, once over 300 feet from the edge of the cliff, was then about 55 feet from the edge of the eroding bluff. The Block Island Southeast Lighthouse Foundation raised about $2 million and in August of 1993 the lighthouse was moved back 300 feet from the edge by International Chimney of Buffalo, NY. The light was reactivated on August 27, 1994.

1996 - Highland (Cape COd) Light moved back 450 feet.

Highland (Cape Cod) Light was the first lighthouse on Cape Cod. In 1996 the lighthouse was moved 450 feet back from the edge of the eroding cliff. The lighthouse is on the Cape Cod National Seashore and is operated by Highland Museum and Lighthouse, Inc., under a National Park Service contract. 1999 - CAPE HATTERAS, NC - MOVED INLAND 2900 FEET.

The present Cape Hatteras Light was designed by Dexter Stetson. There are no known photographs of the first Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which remained standing for some years after the present one was built. In 1999 Cape Hatteras Light was moved (at a cost of $12 million) 2900 feet inland to save it from falling in the Atlantic Ocean. It was extinguished on March 1, 1999 in preparation for the move and was relighted on November 13, 1999. Ownership of the lighthouse was transferred from the Coast Guard to the National Park Service in 1999. Cape Hatteras Light is a National Historic Landmark. It is the tallest lighthouse in the U.S. and is one of the tallest brick lighthouses in the world.

MISPILLION RIVER LIGHT, Shipcarpenter Square, Lewes Historic District, DE. Sold into private hands in 1932, the building was neglected and fell into a state of disrepair. At least one owner along the way had grand plans for renovation, and built a restaurant next to the lighthouse. In December of 2001 the property was sold once again to the local realtor who helped form a group to oversee the restoration–Keepers of Mispillion Light. The new owner planned to reopen the restaurant and sell the lighthouse as timeshares (weekly rentals).

2002 - Isle la Motte, Vermont is relit.

This lighthouse was replaced by a light on a skeleton tower in 1933. The private owners worked with the Coast Guard to return the light to the lighthouse, and on October 5, 2002, the lighthouse was relit with a crowd of 300 looking on.

MOBILE POINT LIGHTHOUSE, AL. The U.S. Lighthouse Board established a temporary light with a small 6th-order lens on Bastion #4 of Fort Morgan at the entrance to Mobile Bay and ordered the old brick Mobile Point Light tower demolished. The temporary light tower was removed and sold for scrap in 1966. Saved and restored by preservationists, it was displayed next to the walls of the fort until 2003 when it was dismantled for safekeeping and it is now in storage. The Alabama Historical Commission intends to restore it and return it to its previous location. Light list #245.

2004 - OLD PLANTATIONS FLATS, VIRGINIA REPLICA BUILT.

This is a replica of an 1886 lighthouse that stood at the entrance to Old Plantation Creek. The original was deactivated in 1962 and subsequently destroyed. The replica has a reproduction of a fourth-order Fresnel lens created by Dan Spinella of Artworks Florida. Also installed is a 1942 bronze fog bell, originally used on a bell buoy.
