Is this the end of the 'Badger'? Is this a new company?

No, not the end of the Badger. Just a revival of an old ferry run.

It will be interesting to see what the price is on that. Its just as fast for me to get to Milwaukee as it is to Manitowac, so if its close in price and faster...

Being the traditional person that I am, I hope that this doesn't hurt the Badger, and I will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take the Badger if it were my choice. The only way to cross, IMHO.....

Tuesday February 3, 2004 - Governor Doyle Announces $800,000 Grant for Milwaukee High-Speed Ferry Service

MILWAUKEE - At a groundbreaking event at the Port of Milwaukee today, Governor Jim Doyle announced an $800,000 state Harbor Assistance Program (HAP) grant to support the Lake Express high-speed ferry service that will connect Milwaukee and Muskegon, Michigan when it begins
operating this coming summer.

"A key part of my 'Grow Wisconsin' Initiative is to make strategic investments in our transportation infrastructure in an effort to spur economic activity and create jobs," Governor Doyle said. "This ferry service will provide a tremendous boost to the tourism industry in Wisconsin and Michigan, connecting travelers to Milwaukee's wide variety of social and cultural activities with the many outdoor and other recreational opportunities along Michigan's western shoreline."

The HAP award to the City of Milwaukee will help complete site preparation work for the ferry terminal building and associated motor vehicle parking area. The award will also assist with the construction of passenger and auto ramps for the ferry service that is expected to begin
operation on June 1, 2004.

The planned catamaran-style ferry will be 192 feet long and 57 feet wide, and will be capable of transporting some 46 vehicles and 250 passengers. At a top speed of about 40 miles-per-hour, the modern vessel will be able to make a one-way voyage between the two cities in about two-and-a-half hours. Its expected service will run from May through December each year with up to three round trips daily.

They mentioned on the radio news yesterday that the people who run the Badger are very worried and slightly upset. They said there was no grant money out there when they were struggling to get running and stay running. They are worried that this will cut into their business.

Suzanne, The Lake Michigan Car Ferry Service has been all wound up about this from the start. I love the Badger; crossed on it many times. I also think a little competition isn't going to hurt them (my two cents). The City of Muskegon is such a depressed city economically, this is going to be a tremendous boost.

I think the latest was a response to the Governor's press release I listed above.

I just now got around to reading this thread, I assumed by the headline it was a different ferry service, a few months ago I heard a story on the news on the radio that a new ferry service was going to run from St. Joe, MI. To Chicago then to Milwaukee and then back to St. Joe. I don't remember how many rounds a day it was at least 2 a day. I thought it was really going to be handy as a lot of Chicago people have their summer/second homes in southwest, MI. It creates a huge bottleneck here in Northwest Indiana every Friday and Sunday night with all those people coming and going.
