Surprised they are allowed to drop it into the river - you'd think there would be some environmental regulation that would prohibit this.

Funny how they will allow you to "fast forward" thru the news video, but not thru the ad . . .

I was in Rhode Island over the weekend to visit the grandkids and to show a friend the area. They had done a lot of prep work on the bridge and I thought about staying until the big boom but couldn't pul it off. More pictures and video on turnto10.com and projo.com

As a side note, we stopped at Castle Hill over the weekend and for those who are used to walking through the woods opposite the Marina driveway, be prepared for some changes the next time that you stop by. The folks who own the resort are clearing the entire area of most of the trees and apparently have some plans for that area.

Do they intend on leaving it there? I just assumed that they would have some kind of reclamation project set up.

The blast split the main section of the bridge into pieces, 55 I think, and dropped them into the bay. Each piece had a buoy attached and will be pulled from the water over the next 6 weeks and recycled. Then the center columns will be blown up and 6 weeks after that the 2 approach spans will be blown up also.

Yes I saw this, shame the old bridge had to go.

I went over the new bridge last Friday. The construction company had warning signs of the new bridge being closed for a four-hour period on Tuesday.

I will miss the old bridge. It has always been a landmark that was easy to spot from great distances when we transit the West Passage of Narragansett Bay. We could judge the visibilty by how easily we could spot the bridge from about eight miles away. The new bridge will be much harder to spot.

Things change and life goes on.

Awesome video, Bob. May have to think twice the next time I visit Roosevelt Island. Would hate to go from the tram into an open air gondola - at night!! eek eek
