Continued from http://www.lighthousekeepers.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=37;t=000238

We all know or could count up the number of lighthouses that we've seen as individuals, couples or families but the other day I got wondering how many we've seen as a group. Maybe it would be fun to list them here. We could start with one state and see how many we've seen in that state and go from there.

Here's the rules. Only one person posts the same lighthouse. One post per person per day. When we get stuck we'll move on to another state. Latecomers can add a new lighthouse to a previous state. After we've finished all the states I'll tally up the final result. A "seen" lighthouse can include a distant view. Seen is seen. For this purpose it's quantity we're looking for! Reproductions are ok but not faux lighthouses.

(Edited Greg's post to correct his link to the first thread in Collective Lighthousing.)

(Buffalo Harbor South Entrance Light)

Sandy, is that the Southside light or is it one of the bottle lights? I keep getting those confused and don't want to bother looking it up again just to forget it later, ha! Thanks.

In the meantime I'll go with Bluff Point, Valcour Island, Lake Champlain.

Mombo,

The description of the picture we took indicates
"BUFFALO HARBOR SOUTH ENTRANCE LIGHT, St. Lawrence Seaway Trail, Buffalo, NY. Built in 1903 and automated in 1935, this 29' steel tower mounted on a concrete platform with a black lantern on the Stony Point Breakwater had a 4th-order Fresnel bivalve lens (transferred to the Buffalo Main Light). Inactive; light replaced by a post light at the end of the breakwater." It's definitely not a "bottle light."

Right Sandy, it is the one I call the Southside light. Seems that this one goes by more than one name, which doesn't help!

http://www.lhdepot.com/database/uniquelighthouse.cfm?value=481

Too bad there isn't a place to get a closer look of it other than across the water. Maybe there is but I just don't know where.

I took my photos from a filling station in one of Buffalo's Not-On-The-Cover-Of-The-Travel-Guide Neighbourhoods, if you know what I mean. Now I know how everyone felt getting petrol in DC when there were the sniper shootings. eek

Too....many...BUFFALO LIGHTS!

Somehow, I think I already have South Buffalo Light as being posted...here's a list of what I call the Buffalo lights:

Buffalo Main: The stone lighthouse
Buffalo Bottle: The bottle light next to the main light
South Buffalo: South Entrance, the one we are talking about here
North Breakwater: The modern structure light

Has somebody seen the modern structure? I messed up my checklist with all this confusion. I need to fix it!

So far the only Buffalo lights posted here have been Buffalo Main and this last one, call it what you will.

There are more and I'm sure they'll be showing up here soon! smile

I've checked off Buffalo Harbor South Entrance Light, Buffalo Main Light ("Chinaman's Light"), and Buffalo (Outer Breakwater) Harbor Light on my list of Buffalo, NY lights. I think I entered Buffalo Harbor South Entrance and Buffalo (Outer Breakwater) Harbor Light and I queried which light Jazzer was referring to when he put in "Buffalo". He responded with the one located at the Coast Guard site, HL #122 which I took to mean Buffalo Main Light. I think there's two lights remaining.

Addendum to previous statement--believe there are two lights left now.

I think you're probably right Sandy as I seem to have checked off the breakwater light too. So we'll call it posted, lol!

Don't think anybody did Buffalo North Breakwater "Bottle" Light--at least not that my list shows. That should be the last one at that location.

Whew! I think that's it for Buffalo lights!

Dunkirk

Just saw this one from outside the fence...as one of my "Ten Commandments of Lighthousing" (okay, eventually there will be ten, I have about three), "If thy lighthouse is closed on a Wednesday, thou shalt visit thy lighthouse on a Wednesday."

Sodus Bay (Sodus Point) Lighthouse, Lake Ontario

Could be wrong, but I think this is what they call the lighthouse that's still standing and the one Jim Johnson entered related to the Sodus Point Plaque marking the location of the original lighthouse. smile smile

How about the little Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. I guess it was a sort of real light before it was moved away from Lake Erie.

I can't think of any others in NY that I've seen. Unless you've seen all the rest Sandy, I'm going to try to get us some help before moving on to the next state. smile

According to John's list, there are a few more left, but most of them are hard to see. This seems like something one of our "Long Island Bobs" would be able to help us in. smile

Perhaps we should do a few small states next, so that we can feel a little more like "we saw a whole state!" Kind of like the "safe red/blue states" in the election...you're guarenteed to see them all. smile

Getting caught up with the forums...this seems like fun and I think I can contribute.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Roosevelt Island yet, but I might have missed it. I saw it on my boat tour out to the Statue of Liberty and around Manhattan.

Doc John-

I posted that I had seen both Stony Points (Hudson and Lake O). I am not sure if that counts as one or two lights. To simplify, I saw the Hudson one, and you saw the Lake O one. wink

As for me, how's Coney Island? I have only seen it from a distance from somewhere in Brooklyn, but as Mombo said at the beginning, it doesn't matter.

Here's what I still have on the Lighthouse Stickers list:

Galloo Island
New Dorp
North Brother Island
Old Orchard Shoal
Robbins Reef
Split Rock

This should simplify it...if you've seen one of these, just post it!

Boy, you're quick Greg! I just realized that you had posted Stony Point way back and I editted my original post to the one I was going to post tomorrow...and then you posted while I was editting...I'll keep Roosevelt and we'll count both Stony Points as being mentioned

I believe Robbins Reef is technically a NJ lighthouse. Stratford Shoal is listed by the Shanklins as being a NY lighthouse. Latimer Reef seems to be in NY waters but claimed by CT. NJ has also sometimes claimed SOL. There are probably others claimed by more than one state as well as at least one I can think of claimed by more than one country.

I'm checking them off using the Shanklins book so have checked off Stratford Shoal. When we get to CT I'll just ignore it if posted again. For this purpose we don't really care who claims them, just trying to get an overall count. And using the state list to simplify matters.

There is actually a bit of controversy surrounding the lighthouse. We included it in the Long Island Lighthouses book because the land upon which the lighthouse sits was ceded by the state of NY in 1874. Since then, it appears that the boundary lines of NY and CT may have shifted.

The New York Legislature ceded the land for Latimer's Reef in 1883.I know CT tried to claim Stratford Shoal, but I haven't heard that they have also tried to claim Latimer Reef. It is actually closer to Rhode Island than Connecticut I believe.

I am going to modify the list by:

Removing the seen Huntington Harbor and Titanic Memorial (yep, that's the right one, Lorie)

Taking off Stratford Shoal (I think it's CT) and Robbins Reef (being a New Jerseyite, I'll take whatever we can get laugh )

Adding Latimer Reef...I, and all my sources, consider this NY. EDIT: Just noticed as I went to close this thread (somehow got up to 55) that Ron Foster has posted Latimer Reef as the first reply to this thread.)

Also, I will add West Bank. Another one seen from the Verazanno. This bridge is great for lighthousing. Maybe one day, I will see these lights from the decks of the QE2 as I pass under the bridge!
