We all know or could count up the number of lighthouses that we've seen as individuals, couples or families but the other day I got wondering how many we've seen as a group. Maybe it would be fun to list them here. We could start with one state and see how many we've seen in that state and go from there.

Here's the rules. Only one person posts the same lighthouse. One post per person per day. When we get stuck we'll move on to another state. Latecomers can add a new lighthouse to a previous state. After we've finished all the states I'll tally up the final result. A "seen" lighthouse can include a distant view. Seen is seen. For this purpose it's quantity we're looking for! Reproductions are ok but not faux lighthouses.

OK here's the first state and the first lighthouse.

New York

Champlain Memorial Lighthouse at Crown Point

(Well what state did you think would be first?! Besides I just saw that lighthouse last Sunday. smile )

This thread could break the record for the longest one. I figure over 725 lighthouses and lightships in the USA. I wonder if there is ANY that ONE of us or the other has not seen?

I think now is the time to take one of John's checklists and start ticking off what we have seen, before it becomes too big a project to do so.

Hmmm, lightships? They tend to move around so to classify them by state might be not quite accurate. But then some lighthouses have changed home states too! Like:

East Charity Shoal

Maybe we should do lightships later, or someone else can start a separate thread for them?

Greg, I plan to alternate between states that have lots of lighthouses and those that don't have too many so keeping track shouldn't be a problem. I have a couple of good checklists at the ready!

Saugerties

We were just there yesterday. Had a nice picnic lunch with a good bottle of red wine and absolutely great fall folliage.

Gee Jim the current Sodus Point Lighthouse wasn't put into operation until 1871. So if you saw the original lighthouse you must be quite a bit older than you look! wink

Jazzer,
Which "Buffalo" light are you referring to? There are 5 within sight of each other--did you see all of them and does your "Buffalo" mean that?

Tibbets Point Light

One of my favourite lighthouse experiences...it was late April, and we were the only people at the juncture of Lake O and the St. Larry. Such a perfect day...one of my favourite lights!

Great light...we saw it twice on our trip. Once with bad photo light (late day) and once with good light (early morning). Mosquitoes in the first photos were so plentiful, they actually show up distinctively in the photo! eek
