Who has visited a lighthouse and experienced something that made your hair stand up on your arms? Have you ever gone alone, but felt there was a presence there with you? Have you been at a lighthouse and something entirely unexpainable has occurred?

And do you know of any one else who has experienced anything like this?

I'm helping with some research, and anything you can relate could be helpful.

Judy

Well...there is always me...and I am real...but seriously, there are several books and even a PBS show regarding haunted lighthouses.

As for personal experiences, lots of historic places (not just lighthouses) make me shiver slightly as if something or someone else is there. This also happens whenever I pass road kill or am in a cemetary. Is it a ghost, a spirit or just an idiosyncracy of mine? Who knows. I've never seen a ghost.

Regards,

Lighthouse Ghost

This is research for new stuff.

So we are talking about new experiences, along the lines of things moving that shouldn't, for example...things we have seen happen.

Thanks, Lighthouse Ghost! So anyone who accompanies you on a lighthousing trip really is with a real ghost! smile

On occasion Bob. Sometimes to move them, on others off they go for an autopsy. Once we had to move a man because the family got into an argument and kicked his body off their plot, 10 years after his burial, seriously. Last week one of my "tennants" even tried to escape from his mausoleum crypt by dripping through the seal and all over the ground. What a aeromatic mess that was!!!! eek
eek eek

Well, I was volunteering at Sea Girt last weekend, maintaining my post in the lantern room. Since attendance was about 25 people/hour, there was a lot of off time between tours coming up to my section of the light (the tower). Since it was also extremely hot, I went downstairs to chat with the other volunteers until the next group was done.

I kept on hearing a banging noise upstairs, almost like someone was up there. I yelled up to check that nobody had gone up ahead of me, since I had opened the hatch to the gallery (only real way to venitlate up there), and people have a tendency to go out, even though insurance reasons states they can't. Nobody replied to my calls.

There's no stories of ghosts at Sea Girt. However, if I remember (I might be mixing it up with another fact, or making it up entirely), one of the other volunteers was saying that someone HAD died in the lighthouse once. Perhaps they've decided to stick around?

Or, I could be going crazy, a fact already partially confirmed. wink

Digger,

I don’t imagine that are a lot of people clamoring for your job. You can remove me from your list of potential candidates.

Aw, come on Bob. I'm always looking for good summer help. College Guys got some pretty good stories to take back to school this year. And no better place to be during Halloween, no shortage of props. Hey, at least the cookouts are popular! confused

Digger,

And what exactly do you prepare for your cookouts? I'm almost afraid to ask.

Well they do make for good neighbors...you always know who your neighbors are, because they don't move very much...or so I thought.

But I'm going to echo Sue's sentiments...that was a yucky story, Digger.

Cook-outs? eek

Have no worry about the cookouts. Usually nice big ribeyes or baby back ribs with stuffed Portabello mushrooms, sweet corn, shrimp cabobs. Usually whatever we can scrounge up. It's funny to watch the look on peoples faces as they pass by the shop and see all the smoke rolling from the grill.

Ghosts... I do, I do, I do believe in ghosts. We have several that keep us company at the boneyard. Just ask one of my part-timers that got so nervous that he never came back after his 2nd day. Must have been when the office door slowely opened next to him and noone was there!

My, has this thread taken a turn for the worse...

I am a little concerned about the cook-outs at the graveyard. You know there are probably some who figure you are cremating one of your guests.

Having had Digger as a passenger on our Door County adventure several years ago, he does respect the work of his contemporaries. I think he "graded" each graveyard we passed by during the trip.

Has anyone here experienced any strange happenings at Pensacola Lighthouse in Florida?

There are ghost stories attached to this lighthouse, but have you or someone you know experienced something unexplainable while there?

I'm also still in search of these stories personally experienced at any lighthouse.

Thanks all!

Judy

Judy, I know one of the docents at Pensacola, and she has stated that she has heard someone walking up the stairs when she was the only person in the tower, also she told me there is a blood stain in one of the upstairs bedrooms that came back after the floors were refinished.

Hi Digger!
I thought you were kidding about your occupation!
I'm curious about who came to the cook-outs?
My husband was a mortitian but he's not here anymore.
As for me Digger, I'm not going anywhere!

Hi Kay, The cook-outs are open to any town employees. They usually bring quite a hungry crowd sometimes and we have had to go get more food already. If there's a lack of fresh meat we just go and run someone over (kidding)!!!! laugh

Judy, I am fascinated by haunted lighthouse stories. Unfortunately, I have never experienced anything except creepy feelings when I have been in certain lighthouses. I had that at Point Lookout - considered to be the most haunted light in America because of Civil War happenings there and at Saginaw River Rear Range recently. Each time I happened to be by myself in an area where the hauntings happen - only I didn't know about the hauntings at the time. Darlene (Ladybug) and I shared our interest at the reunion and she sent me a website last month: http://www.angelfire.com/va3/keepthelightsshining/Personal/HauntedLighthouses2.html/. We looked for the ghost at Pointe Aux Barques but didn't see it. There are lots of stories in print on this topic. I bought a tape from Lighthouse Depot featuring several haunted lights, as well. I love the idea of ghosts and would love to experience something - maybe - perhaps - I think? Anyway, I would love to hear about your research.

I too, am interested in haunted lighthouses. It's too bad that we didn't do some ghost chasing while we were on the Michigan lighthouse
trip! There are several "haunted lighthouses" in Maine but I didn't see or hear any the times that I was there.

There is going to be a "Haunted Lighthouse" program on The Travel Channel, on either Oct 30, or 31. at 7PM.

Kay, if you will go to the website I posted earlier, you will find some of the lights we visited on the bus trip. Maybe we can organize a trip specifically for visiting haunted lights. I am sure we can find a bunch of them close enough to each other to be able to work it out. How about it, Dave? Any interest?
