Charleston (Morris Island) Light - South Carolina

The Morris Island Lighthouse received a first-order lens that the keeper lighted for the first time on October 1, 1876. The tower is 161 feet high. Despite damage from a hurricane in 1885 and an earthquake the following year and erosion of all the surrounding land, the tower has survived.

Rock of Ages Light - Michigan

The Rock of Ages light, on a brick tower with a concrete foundation located on a long, narrow, rock ridge off the western end of Isle Royale, went into service on October 22, 1908. For two years a temporary lens beamed from this light, but finally a permanent second-order lens, 117 feet above lake level, began guiding vessels past Isle Royale.

Assateague Light - Virginia

Congress appropriated funds in 1859 and soon work began the following year. Construction soon ceased because of the advent of the Civil War. In 1865, work resumed, and on October 1, 1867, the light shone from the new First-Order Lens for the first time. The light is visible for nineteen miles.

Hunting Island Light - South Carolina

On October 3, 1889, Hunting Island Lighthouse was relit after being dismantled, moved 1 1/3 miles, and rebuilt. The move was done due to danger to the lighthouse from erosion.

Hooper Strait Light - Maryland

The Lighthouse Board built a new screw-pile lighthouse at Hooper Strait and lighted it October 15, 1879. It replaced the one destroyed in the winter of 1877. It was equipped with a Fifth-Order Lens.

St. George Reef Light - California

In 1883, workmen began preparing the site, but work halted for the next three years because Congress failed to appropriate necessary funds. Work resumed in 1887 with the hauling of cut stones to the site. Construction continued for the next four years, and on October 20, 1892, the keeper lighted the first-order lens. The lighthouse cost $704,633.78, and was the most expensive one built in the United States up to that time.
