Boston Light - Massachusetts

Construction began on the original Boston Light after June, 1715, and just over a year later, on September 14, 1716, the keepers displayed the light for the first time. The lighthouse, built of stone, was a tall, graceful tower, and its light consisted of either candles or lamps.

Cape Hatteras Light - North Carolina

On September 17, 1870, the keeper lighted the lamp in the new first-order lens. The light was 190 feet above mean low water. The district lampist removed the lens and lantern from the old tower, and, since there was danger it might topple in a storm, the district engineer set off in the tower three charges of explosives, "blowing out," he reported, "a large wedge on the side toward the beach and this old land mark was spread out on the beach a mass of ruins."

St. Simons Light - Georgia

The current St. Simons Lighthouse was lighted for the first time on September 1, 1872. A third-order lens, 104 feet above sea level, surmounted the tower. The original tower was destroyed by the Confederates during the Civil War.

Sand Island Light - Alabama

In 1864 the Lighthouse Board was dismayed to find the Confederates had blown up the "magnificent tower at Sand Island." Establishing a temporary light, the board laid plans to erect a new tower that had a light with a focal plane 125 feet above sea level. Lighted September 1, 1873, the new conical brick tower contained a second-order lens. In 1906, a storm swept away the keepers' dwelling, drowning the assistant keeper and his wife. Meanwhile, erosion continued and in 1914, the tower stood wholly in water.

Matagorda Light - Texas

The keeper exhibited the light at its new location on the west side of Pass Cavallo at the entrance to Matagorda Bay on September 1, 1873. In August, 1886, a storm swept the coast and destroyed all the buildings at the station except the tower and keeper's dwelling.

Cape St. Elias Light - Alaska

Lighted on September 6, 1916, the light station became known by the name Cape St. Elias because its purpose was to identify this important landfall to navigators.

Esopus Meadows Lighthouse - New York

Ownership of the lighthouse was transferred from the USCG, via the GSA to the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse, charter name representing SELC (Save Esopus Lighthouse Commission) on September 22, 2002.

Port Austin Reef Light - Michigan

Port Austin Reef Lighthouse extends into Lake Huron at the tip of Michigan's "Thumb," the turning point for north bound ships heading into Saginaw Bay. A total of $81,871 was spent on this light and it was first exhibited on September 15, 1878.

Saginaw River Rear Range Light - Michigan

The structure now standing replaced the original lighthouse, which was badly deteriorated by the 1870's. Congress then appropriated $23,000 for a pair of range lights which went into service on September 15, 1876. The station consists of a two-story brick keeper's dwelling and attached is a 77 feet high tower.

White Shoal Light - Michigan

Congress approved $250,000 for the construction of a light station at White Shoal to replace the lightship. Construction began in 1908 and the new light was first exhibited on September 1, 1910.

Little Traverse (Harbor Point) Light - Michigan

This light station was established in 1884, with the light first exhibited on September 25 of that year. Mrs. Elizabeth Whitney Williams was the first keeper, after previously serving at the Beaver Island Harbor Light. A Fourth Order Fresnel lens is still in place in the tower.

Rock of Ages Light - Michigan

Although the light tower was sufficiently completed to exhibit a temporary light in October, 1908, it was not until September, 1910 that the permanent lens was exhibited. The freighter George m. Cox ran aground on the nearby reef on May 27, 1933, and keeper John F. Soldenski helped rescue the 125 survivors, who spent a day packed together inside the light tower until taken off the next day.

Isle Royale Light - Michigan

Construction of this light station began in the spring of 1874, and the light was first exhibited on September 20, 1875, with the total cost of the work amounting to $20,000.
