Mackinac State Historic Parks officals will host an Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse grand opening celebration on Saturday, June 26, with a ceremony, evening dinner cruise and musical concert.
The grand opening begins at 10 am with a dedication on the grounds of Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. Artists and musicians will be on hand as chief curator Steve Brisson presents a brief history of the light station followed by remarks from dignitaries. Ray Olsen and Dick Campbell, sons of Old Mackinac Point light keepers, will participate in a flag-raising ceremony.
The re-opening of the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse is part of a restoration in progress. Built in 1892, the castle-like lighthouse operated continuously until 1957. Visitors will greet guides dressed in historic lighthouse keeper uniform, view the structure's original Fresnel lens, see a period re-creation of the keeper's kitchen from 1910 and climb the circular stairs to the top of the tower.
