Hope you guys have a great time. Wish I could be there but there are just too many things going on in March for me to get out there on a Friday night. I'm still hoping to get out to LI that Saturday for the Suffolk County Lighthouse Day though.

It was really a great outing.

The evening began with Gottfried Mahler doing a 45 minute slide presentation about his time at Fire Island in the late 1940s-early 1950s. Gottfried has a lot of great stories about his time there.

Then, the four other keepers (Louie, Kevin, Tom and Tony) each took a few moments to reflect on their time as lighthouse keepers. Louie, who I believe is 91, is still pretty feisty! smile

After dinner, Bill got up and spoke about "strings attached" and talked about his experiences as a child.

As a heads up, the May/June issue of The Long Island Light Keeper will have a lot of keepers' stories, including an article by Tony Tuliano that describes his time at Plum Island in the 1970s.

Bill also presented a Harbour Lights Sculpture to each Keeper. He said, he asked for each Keeper's own Lighthouse, "but found out that they (HL) didn't make them all" (hint/hint) So he let them select from Montauk, Fire Island, Long Beach Bar, Race Rock and Cold Spring Harbor(???). He let them choose in order of age - oldest to the youngest!
Each dinner attendee was also the recipient of a Little Light.
I heard some good stories outside the restrooms from some of the Keepers but they can't be repeated here. LOL
I guess you'll have to get to a Long Island event for me me to tell you in person.
It was quite an experience, and a great job was done by the Long Island Chapter to put this event together.

Bob:

I'm pretty sure the five figurines were: Fire Island (which went to Gottfried), Race Rock (which went to Tom--Kevin said he already had 3 Race Rocks sitting at home, so he didn't need another!), Montauk (which went to Louie), Long Beach Bar (Kevin) and the Statue of Liberty (Tony). I may have Kevin and Louie's selections mixed up, but I know the other three are right.

Either way, it was very nice of Bill to bring those along! laugh smile

It looks and sounds like you had a splendid time. Sure wish that we could have been there but you can't, unfortunately, be in more that one place at a time.

Harbour Lights, again, supports lighthouse preservation with it's generous donations and participation in events like this one. You will never find another company so caring, dedicated and supportive.

I look forward to the May/June issue of The Long Island Light Keeper. Thank you, Long Island Chapter, USLHS for all you are doing for our lighthouses.
