I got some good news on Friday. Suffolk County Parks is submitting a Capital Project ($1 million) to the County Executive for the historical restoration of Cedar Island Lighthouse. vhappy This is only the 1st stage in the process but quite a new developement that I am very excited about. I'm told the long term plan is for a possible bed n breakfast. But let's not get to far ahead of ourselves. The Executive will now have to approve it, and submit it to the County Legislature for approval. Then it would have to be funded after approval.

Glad to hear this! My wife and I went to see this lighthouse last year and thought about this light and what it must have looked like in its hey day!
Can't wait to see this project get underway!
Thanks for that info...Bob!

Current news is that the revised project for $200,000 for immediate repairs and stabilization has been approved by the Executive Office and submitted to the Legislature.

Thanks also to the ELL, Forum, and Collectors for their generous grant towards the environmental Trail to the Lighthouse. laugh

That would be great. This is one lighthouse we have yet to see. Last time I inquired about it I was warned about the snakes around there and decided not to visit it at that time. Snakes just aren't too inviting!

Snakes? I never heard anyone mention anything about snakes out there.

I've only visited this light a couple of times. I left my boat in Sag Harbor and took my inflatable out to the light. I never saw any snakes in that area. I didn't think snakes hung around near the salt water and sandy beaches.

No snakes that I'm aware of Judy! There's always piping plover nesting in the spring, and a good walk along the shore. I've been out there dozens of times with no sightings. I guess there's always some wildlife in the dunes but not causing a problem that you need to be worried about.

Following up on a rumor today, I found out that SC Parks has a repaired the roof on the lighthouse. I knew Public Works was going out there for a site visit in February but never expected results this quickly! vhappy
This should button up the outside to all elements while we raise funds for the next stage of restoration.

Bob, That is some GREAT news as we went there for a visit last year and I was real concerned over the gaping hole in the roof! Do you happen to know of anyone close by that can snap a few pics of the new roof? I hope to get there for the LI Challenge if I can make it...still up in the air at the moment!

Glad to hear that there are no snakes out there. I would love to visit it someday. I am just not sure how to get there. I heard it was open only once a year and that is never when we are there.

Judy, Cedar Point Park is always open, and you can always walk out to the lighthouse. The Cedar Island Lighthouse is never open because the inside was destroyed by a fire. There is an adjacent restored oil house which has some information and is always open.

Trying to get info from Parks Supervisor, Bob but I will definitely have new pics in a couple of weeks.

Bob, isn't there also a nice new signed trail leading to the light?

Great to hear that the county public works people got right onto the need for a roof. That it seemed to be a fairly high priority would have to be a nice indicator of good things to come from the county.

Yes Dave, see the April 24th post. towel

We have a nice new enviromental posted trail to the lighthouse. Thanks to the Forum members for their support.

Things do seem to be going in a positive direction. We've come a long way from the Bob, Bob, & Mike initial concern for this great lighthouse.

I spoke with the SC Parks Suprintendant, Randy Bond today, and confirmed that the county has made repairs to the roof where the holes were(not a new roof yet as previously thought), and fixed the areas where the pitched angles of the roofs meet to eliminate additional leaks. They are now discussing replacement of the roof, and what materials should be used.

Oh, so they just secured the roof for now...which is still great news! I misunderstood you and thought that they replaced the roof with a new one. This is such a nice lighthouse and very nice walk to get there on the beach...
No snakes when we visited last year...don't know about that...it was very safe to me and the mrs... and she hates snakes too!
And the character of this one is so cool!
