As we The Houston Light Keepers get ready for our first raffle several questions have come to mind. The key question and most important one is, as club members do we participate and buy tickets? Do we allow family members to participate? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated especially in the area of what not to do.

Thanks

Chuck, Becki, Mike and Terry

First of all don't call it a raffle... it is an opportunity drawing. Some counties, towns and or states have strict laws when it comes to raffles..

I don't participate in an opportunity drawing when I have donated the lighthouse but if it is one donated by Harbour Lights or a painting by Digger, I buy tickets to help in the restoration of lighthouses. I don't think any club members have a problem with that especially since I never win.

I know I wouldn't have a problem with you or your family buying tickets. After all the reason for the drawing is to generate money for the lighthouse. And a ticket sold is a ticket sold (.)

Paul and Stephanie are correct. You have every right to purchase opportunities the same as everyone else. After all, you are supporting your own club when you do so. Just be sure that someone other than the leaders/officers picks the tickets. That way you can always blame them if you win!

aw shucks you mean I can't draw my own ticket. There goes that plan. Time for plan B. Wait, I have to check with the other members and see if we have a plan B.

Keep em rollin

Just do what Mark did in his drawing- use some innocent children and take pictures.

Although the pictures seem to have vanished from the forums.

Also, someone should tell bob over at the Long Island Chapter of USLHS to start calling his raffles "opportunities " drawings.

The County Mountie from Lower Podunk may come looking for him.LOL

Chuck,

I have a plan B...when it doubt, we need to stuff the ballot box, or in this case the "opportunity" ticket box. It was working for that photography contest w/ Sean until someone figured it out.

This, of course, would be the ONLY way I could win as I am probably the most unlucky person alive.

Sorry Becki, If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any!

Becki,

Trust Bert! There are plenty of us out here who seem to win very seldom (or never). There are also several who seem to win no matter when, where or what the odds are!

I agree, if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have none either. Maybe those others have some secret society that they just haven't shared w/ us...now I'm unlucky AND an outcast.

I usually purchase tickets for the LI Chapter "opportunity drawings" even though I am on the Board of Directors.

So far, I've only won HL keychains etc., not any of the "major" prizes. If I did, I wouldn't accept the prize and instead donate it back so that the organization can have the opportunity to make more money.
