The St. George Lighthoouse Association held a meeting last night and the minutes were sent to me. Here are the highlights. The State of Florida MAY fund the collection of lighthouse debris under a FEMA project for Gulf front beaches. Mr. Plessinger has agree to lease property for the storage of salvage pieces at no cost to the association. The $300 a month value can be used for future grant as matching funds. cool A tentative date for collecting loose bricks and materials is Feb. 25th, depending on weather and water levels. Also I have been honored to be appointed to fill a board vacancy. laugh

Congratulations, Eric! And best wishes for good weather on the 25th. Wish I could be there to help, but I will be thinking of all of you wonderful folks who are working so diligently to save St. George.

I'm hoping Eric will be along today or tomorrow with an update on how things went at the workday and how plans are progressing.

He has been such an impassioned advocate for the light that I believe they made a good choice in adding him to their board.

Dave, you are right on about Eric. They may have had such a good day yesterday, that they may be out working again today. Can't wait to hear the latest from him.

Hi all, let me try to post again, last night I was tired and somehow erased my whole message. Since the weather looked so bad for Saturday, we planned for Sunday to go out in the landing craft that the state is lending us as we needed it (others use it to). Turns out Saturday was good weather, but we did not have the landing craft. Dennis (the President) and others did take the jeep and trailer on a test run in the sandy area near the bridge and it did very well. When I arrived I got Dennis to show me the sites in mind and the one by the bridge will most likely be the one. I like that site in part because as we get off the bridge the lighthouse will be there right in front. Dennis figures there is room for one keepers house. The island is skinny so the beach on the gulf is only 3 blocks away.

I talked to Dennis and Terry (Secretary)and learned more about the light. I also saw a video tape of the first group (which included Dennis)taking down the metal stairs. However, the metal stairs were only installed in the 1970's before that was wood. Also learned that the roof of the lantern room is missing, but of course we will look for it.

Sunday unfortunately we had high winds, so are start was delayed for 2 hours to see if the weather got better, but it did not. In fact it included small craft warnings. I had to go back to work today, so I did not stay. The weather today was suppose to be good, but have not heard anything yet.

By the way Crooked River, San Blas and St. Joe are OK, nothing new except at Crooked River there is Barbara Revell Lane. She spearheaded the Crooked River group and was President until recently.

On Monday the St. George Lighthouse Association made it to the island and collected as estimated 1 1/2 tons of loose brick. laugh The sand has continued to collect around the ruins. It was pointed out that this is a good thing as the pieces will be protected from surf and wind. smile The lantern room is almost completely buried. Everyone feels better that a real start has been made. cool I was of course disappointed to miss it, but very glad it went well. A lot of work will still need to be done.
