The "Benefit on the Block", celebrating the 10th anniversary of the move of Southeast Light, Block Island, RI, will raise funds for the restoration of this historic lighthouse. This event is being hosted by NELL and will feature Bill Younger and Harry Hine. This event will take place August 9, 2003 at the Southeast Light on Block Island.

There will be plenty of food, fun, auctions and even the announcement of winners in our Art, Poetry & Verse Contest for children of the Block Island, RI school system.

We would love for you to join us that day but even if you can't you can still help to restore this unique Victorian Gothic lighthouse through one of the following.

Featured Opportunity Drawing: - Cost of each ticket: $100.00
Prize #1: Cut the Ribbon and have the option to be the FIRST to stay 2 nights in one of the new Lighthouse Keeper’s suites when renovations are completed. The suite includes a bedroom, sitting room, kitchenette and private bath. A private tour of the tower is also included.

Prize #2: Harbour Lights “GOLD” Southeast Light On the Move.

NOTE: The first name drawn will choose between the 2 prizes. The remaining prize will go to the second name drawn.


Benefit Drawing: Tickets $2.00 each or 6 for $10. There will be many, wonderful prizes including an original Limited Edition Southeast Light by Harbour Lights signed by Bill Younger.

Tickets for both of these drawings ("Featured Opportunity Drawing" and "Benefit Drawing") will be available on the NELL Website at www.nell.cc in the next couple of days along with who to make the check out to and the address to send it to.

I've been watching the NELL site, but haven't seen any update on the raffles, and also cost on the SE Block piece?

Since there is unfortunately no way I can make this I would like to be able to participate somewhat

MelJB, I apologize for the lack of an update. The original design of the tickets and the information associated with them was incorrect on the first print. The bugs are being worked out to better describe the various levels of donors as well as the different "raffles/drawings".

Please, have a bit more patience with us. As soon as the bugs are worked out we will make sure you are the first to know.

With Ron Foster (NELL's President) on the "left" coast doing his lighthousing thing, I wanted to remind the forum members that the "Benefit on the Block", in support of Southeast Light on Block Island, is but 3 weeks away on August 9th...Community support has been wonderful. The Town Council has even declared August 9th as "Southeast Lighthouse Day".
Wonderful donations have been received for the auctions or raffles. Substantial donors will have their names emblazoned on a permanent plaque.
We have designed "special event" tee shirts, magnets, and pins. Bill Younger and Harry Hine will be there to sign our unique additions to the wonderful Southeast Light On The Move (see prior entries)which the Southeast Gift shop has purchased. Block Island children's art work will be featured, with note cards, matted originals, etc.
We expect over 50 NELL members to invade the island to carry our this major benefit. We have ordered excellent weather, and more fun than we can describe.

OK Wackos. Who is going to attend the event on Block Island next weekend and when is everyone arriving? Where does everyone plan to stay while in the area? I plan to be there on Saturday, but am staying on the mainland and taking the ferry out. See everyone there.

I've had to change my plans.

We were supposed to be there from Sat until Tue, but with the problems coming back from Hawaii I had to cancel since I wasn't sure what the Doctors here would say or when.

I have another appointment this Thursday and hope to get more info from the Doctor.

I was supposed to help out at the event, but didn't want to cancel out at the last moment.

I'm still planning on being at the Regional in September.

Our beautiful t-shirts with the view of Southeast light up on the girders, has arrived ($18 for most sizes)...Also the pins (beautiful, $4) and magnets (same view, $2). We have notecards with the children's art production ( 8 of the 37 submitted in each pack) all produced. We have a "children's t-shirt" of one of the paintings...only a few adult versions of this one. As you can see--we've been busy. We have over 15 items in our raffle (beginning with HL 128 signed SE Light!!) and likely 100 or more for the auction. We arrived in Providence at about 11:00pm last night. This morning we are waiting for a break in the weather to get a flight to the Island. Right now looks like 1:00pm for that break.

Welcome to New England, Tom & Joyce! Lorna & I are going to take the ferry out of Point Judith this morning. The boating weather has been lousy this week so "It's Only Money" will remain at the dock.

We were at Block Island for eight days last week (Saturday-Saturday, not the Beatles song) and had good weather. This past week has been foggy, many showers, and a few torrential downpours. We sincerely hope that the rain holds off until after the event today. Pray for sun!!!

Ok, when will we find out who the winners were? I didn't receive a call so I guess I won't pack my things for the 2 day stay in the lighthouse keepers quarters.

I was there for the drawing, and if my memory serves me correctly, a person not present (I didn't recognize the name) won the right to choose the 2-night stay or the gold Southeast Light. Mary Jane Foster (Nell President Ron's bride)came in second. So now MJ has to wait until the other person makes his or her choice.

I don't know about you kids, but I would take the gold! Yet again, I'm with the rest of you in the "also bought a ticket" group. Our tickets are probably at the end of West Beach Road right now (Island Transfer Station), awaiting a trip to the mainland.

The other winner was NELL member Sandra Jennings. I've not heard what her choice was yet.

Sometime in 2005 (or later) MJ and I will be staying two nights inside the Southeast Lighthouse. Sandra & Stan Jennings will be displaying their "GOLD" Southeast Light on the Move in a well deserved location I hope.

The original design of each apartment that Carolyn and I saw a year ago, included one bedroom and one "sitting room" with a potential convertible couch, as well as a kitchen and one bathroom...So, unless the wacko are a VERY friendly group, there won't be much opportunity for a stream of visitors...Frank Carbone

I received my Southeast Block OTM in the mail today. Thanks to Frank and Carolyn Carbone and the entire NELL group.

It was nice to receive the special sticker on the bottom with Bill and Harry's signatures as well as the special event postcard.

I also bought the pin to add to my lighthouse pin collection.

Went by the PO and picked up my package from Frank and Carolyn. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! If you can't tell, I really appreciate being able to participate in the event even if it was long distance. The t-shirt, pins and magnet all are great and of course the OTM piece with the special event sticker.

Hope NELL's efforts were well rewarded.

A special Thank you again to Carolyn for calling me when the size t-shirt I wanted wasn't available to make sure about another size rather than just sending my $$ back. Frank, what a lovely lady you have! A real pleasure to speak with! But I bet you knew that already
