Many of you who recently visited North Point Light in Milwaukee noticed its poor condition and said that they hoped some group would help restore and preserve it. Well there is a group that is currently raising funds with plans to restore North Point Light in Milwaukee.

The Coast Guard took the North Point Light Station out of service in 1993, and the U.S. General Services Administration agreed in 1999 to give the tower and adjoining property to Milwaukee County. The tower stands east of Wahl Ave., about one-half mile north of North Ave.

The county leased the tower, house and land to the non-profit Water Tower Preservation Fund Inc. This is a joint venture of the Water Tower Landmark Trust and the Lake Park Friends.

The Water Tower Preservation Fund Inc plans to turn the cast-iron tower that stands on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan into a permanent symbol of Milwaukee's maritime history. The adjacent keeper's quarters, a 2 1/2-story clapboard house, would be renovated into an exhibit space for marine artifacts and meeting rooms for community groups.

John Scripp, chairman of the Joint Lighthouse Committee, said the preservation group hoped to restore the tower and house in a fashion that would provide for continued public use and enjoyment. The tower would be open for tours, giving visitors an inspiring view of Lake Michigan and the city.

The North Point Light Station is envisioned to be a multi-purpose facility offering marine exhibit rooms, community meeting rooms and offices. The lighthouse itself would be repainted and lit with decorative lighting on the interior and exterior. Tours staffed by volunteers would enable visitors to climb to the top of the 74’ tower for spectacular views of the lakefront and the city.

The WTPF can be contacted at: Water Tower Preservation Fund, Inc. PO Box 668, Milwaukee WI 53201.

Thank you Suzanne for this information. It is always great to hear about folks banding together to save lighthouses and to make use of them and have them open to the public is icing on the cake.

Suzanne,

I agree with Ron! But keep us posted on how things are coming along. It would also be nice if pictures of the light and what is being done were posted for all to see.

Here's one link. I never realized how pretty a light this is.

Thanks for the information. You should nominate this one for the 2004 Wacko pin since we just voted on 2003.

Sanibel, I would agree, but one of the rules are that Harbour Lights has to produce a figurine of the light first!

Now, if it becomes a figurine ...

We visited this LH last summer. It wasn't easy to find. It is located in a very nice area, adjacent to a golf course. It was well worth the search. There are lovely trails nearby as well.
Would love to see HL do this sculpture!
