Please Help Save The Avery Point Lighthouse - Order your Memorial Brick Today! - What a Fantastic way to Honor a Loved One and at the same time help Preserve One of America's Treasures!

The Avery Point Lighthouse Society (APLS)
Helping to Relight History

The Avery Point Lighthouse Society was formed in February 2000 with the goal of saving, restoring, relighting and functionally maintaining the Avery Point Lighthouse located on the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus in Groton, Connecticut. The Society is a Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF) of Wells, Maine. We are a nonprofit organization comprised of ordinary citizens from southeastern Connecticut who are working closely with representatives of the University of Connecticut and staff members of ALF toward the common goal of saving, restoring and relighting the Avery Point Lighthouse.
Your help is urgently needed to save this historic maritime lighthouse. Remember, this is not only the last lighthouse built in the State of Connecticut, but more significantly, it is the only lighthouse built as a memorial to all other lighthouses and light keepers.

Won’t you please help us in raising the additional funds necessary to ensure completion of this historic restoration project?

The Avery Point Lighthouse Society is continuing its exciting fundraising program called "Brick 'buy' Brick You Can Help Save a Lighthouse". All of you lighthouse lovers and supporters now have a chance to purchase and personalize a memorial brick that will become a permanent part of the landscaped walkway leading up to the lighthouse and apron around the lighthouse. All profits go directly toward the restoration and relighting of the Avery Point Lighthouse, the only lighthouse reported to have been built as a memorial to all other lighthouses and light keepers.

Don't miss this special opportunity to dedicate a special brick or to remember loved ones with a personalized brick. They make excellent gifts for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and memorials. Please place your order for Memorial Bricks by May of this year..

For More Information Contact APLS at 860-445-5417 or email APLS. (APLS1941@aol.com) You may also check out the website of the Avery Point Lighthouse Society at: http://apls.tripod.com/

Paul, do you know if previously ordered bricks have been made?

The folks at Lighthousing.net and over at our Yahoo site, Lighthouse Nuts, purchased bricks in those names back when the first call went out.

It'll be a thrill to actually see those in place one of these days.

The members of the Collector Forums purchased two bricks in honor of member Bill O'Brien (oseabee) after his death. We also raised enough money to purchase a roof shingle at Block Island Southeast Light and gave enough that there will be two benches at Anclote Key in Bill's honor.

Here is the story

laugh Judy - The first order for the bricks will go out the end of this month or the beginning of next month. The company that is making the bricks does need some lead time. They will make the bricks and store them for the Avery Point Lighthouse Society and ship them when APLS is ready to install them.

A big celebration will be held when the project is completed and we are all looking forward to that great Lighthouse Event! laugh

All my best,
Paul Conlin

Although a date has not yet been set for the relighting ceremony at Avery Point the steering committee has begun to put together ideas for this celebration. Setting the date all hinges on the completion of the ongoing restoration of the lighthouse. As soon as a date is set we will make sure everyone who has donated toward the restoration will get an invitation. This unique location (within view of half dozen other lighthouses) on the grounds of the University of Connecticut's Avery Point Campus and the Branford House (Morton Plant's mansion) is a beautiful place for celebrating the restoration of this one-of-a-kind lighthouse.

If you haven't donated yet to this cause via a brick purchase, or some other way, I urge you to do so.

I sent in two checks last year so they could get work started (the college would not let them do anything until they had raised all the money they thought they needed).
I will send in another check soon. The check would be written today but can't get the kids to skip a few meals. wink
Take care, Eric

You are absolutely correct Eric. No hands could be lifted until the dollars got in the bank. This is why this restoration is being done in phases. Thank you so much for your participation in this endeavor. I know that when the light is relit (maybe this coming Oct.-Nov. time frame) we can all gather for a huge celebration.
