Good Monday Morning,

I saw this ad for Chivas recently in a magazine ... needless to say an extraordinary shot ... Anyone have a guess as to which lighthouse it might be?

Are you old enough to be reading Chivas ads?

Looks like a British light, but I have no idea if it is nor which one.

John,

You made me laugh ... My BOYS are old enough to be reading Chivas ads ...

Though I "borrowed" the picture from their website, if you saw the picture in context, in the magazine where I found it, I guarantee ... one hundred percent guarantee ... two things ...

... one ... you may not have seen it the first, or even the second, time through ... you may, as I have, missed it altogether and then tripped upon it quite by accident ...

... two ... upon seeing this issue, one cannot help become a Chicago Cubs fan, if not for life, then certainly for this upcoming season ...

Paul is the resident Chivas fan. Maybe he wrote them suggesting they combine two of the things he really enjoys . . . .

Open lighthouse gallery + alcohol = eek. eek laugh

Seriously, very interesting ad. Anyone else have ads? Maybe we could make an ad thread.

Sure, they are ads. Kind of surprised they didn't use NY lights on their labels though.

Do you have any ideas about the Chivas ad? Is it possible that it is a UK light? Taking a loser look at it, the Fresnel has to be a first or second order, with maybe as many as 4 bullseyes. Definitely a land fall light as opposed to a harbor light.

Looking at that picture in the larger size, is that actually a clam shell lens?

Hello Grover,

thanks to Photoshop, the Lighthouse ad is a 'two-locations ad'...
- the Lighthouse: Faro de Penas, Spain
- people and landscape have been shot in Porquerolles, France
The reason being security and feasability: it is not possible to find a lighthouse footbridge wide enough to fit people sitting!

Regards

Thanks, Lightshipfan. Now, how did you determine the location? From your personal knowedge of the region or from other sources?

It does look like a very interesting light.

Dave, the answer is, that I am collecting lighthouse ads. I am trying to find out, why the company used a lighthouse to represent their product. Chivas used this lighthouse, because a lighthouse is a synonym for travel, openmindness, and "living it large". Chivas consumers care about style, aspire to the best of everything and want to live life to the fullest, they want to have the Chivas life!

Have a good Tueday!

Thanks, Lightshipfan. Interesting analogy there.

You would really enjoy Pigeon Point Light. It has been used in many ads, often television. The ad firms have not been too shy about moving it around the country to fit their needs.

Paul, we are going to have to work on the style issue....

Barry - is there any printing along the edge of the button to show the source? Seems like there should be a "This message..."

Stan and Margaret - that looks like a light along the West Coast of the US. Maybe Umpqua River, Oregon? If you look at www.lighthousefriends.com, click "search by map" at the bottom, and look at CA/OR/WA lights, you will definitely find one or more matches.

I thought of Umpqua right away, too, Greg. But Umpqua has the big RED First Order Lens. This one has an aero-beacon. Perhaps Yaquina?

Strange that a British Bank would choose an American Lighthouse, but it sure does look American -- and Northwesetern, too.

In answer to Greg, John and The Lighthouse Duo, that's North Head light.

North Head is totally the wrong shape conical tower.. The tower in the button has two outside railings and walkways around the lanternroom at different levels..

Paul

I was answering the lighthouse Duo's Question. In the advertisement that they show, the lighthouse IS North Head. Take a look at the second photo on Lighthouse friends website. Lets look at the characteristics in question.

Tower appears to be straighter up and down than your typical tower.

About the campaign button, if I remember correctly, it is not required on buttons. (Would be hard to get on or read anyway.) laugh

I agree with the bank ad being North Head, but it has been a little styleized I do believe. It certainly appears thinner and taller that one would normally see. Granted, you can achieve the effect with camera angle, but it sure looks like a little help from Photoshop.

The bank is now sending me all manner of answers. They originally claimed the light to be Start Point here in England, but it looks nothing like that. So they appologised and have gone away for some more investigation :p
I am reasonably certain that they would not use a US lighthouse (sorry  ) and that this is a southern UK light. But which one? We will see... Watch this space! I'll let you know!

I'm 99% certain that is North Head Washington. But we shall see what the Bank comes up with. Could be a bit of embarassment for them to admit it's not an English light.

John, I think you are right. They have finally admitted that they bought the pictures from some advertising service and are "not sure which light it is, but it may be American".
Well that is it then... North Head it is.
Wow, Eric is right... Clever Lighthouse People !!
Thanks for all the interest!
